And us, have i fhewed unto you what the Lord reireth, and what he forbiddeth in this commandent and now, neighbour Nomologista, I pray ou tell me whether you keep it perfectly or

Nom. Sir, before I tell you that, I pray you Il me how you prove that the Lord in this ommandment doth require all these duties, and orbid all thefe fins?

Evan. First, I know that the Lord in this ommandment doth require all these duties, beaufe no man can truly have the Lord for his God, except he hath chofen him for his portin; and no man can truly chufe the Lord for is portion, before he truly know him; and he hat doth truly know God, doth truly believe both his threatenings and his promifes; and he hat doth truly believe the Lord's threatenings, nuft needs fear and tremble at them; and he hat doth truly believe the Lord's promifes, muft needs truly love him, for faith doth always produce and bring forth love; and whofoever doth truly love God, must needs defire near Communion with him; yea, and rejoice in communion with him; yea, and fear to offend him; yea, and forrow for offending him; yea, and be zealous for his glory.

Secondly,

Secondly, I know, that all these fins are for bidden in this commandment, because that what foever the mind, will, and affections of men are fer upon, or carried after, either more, or a much as after God, that is another God, unte him and therefore if a man ftand in fear of a ny creature, or fear the loss of any creature, e ther more than God, or equal with God, he makes that creature his god; and if he truft un to and put confidence in any creature, either more than in God, or equal with God, that crea ture is his god and hence it is that the covet ous man is called an idolater, Eph. v. 5. for that he maketh gold his hope, and faith to the fine gold, "Thou art my confidence," Job xxxi. 24. And if any man be proud of any good thing he hath, and do not acknowledge God to be the free giver and beftower of the fame; or if he be impatient and difcontented under the Lord's correcting hand, he makes himself a god; and if a man fo love any creature, as that he defires it being abfent, or delights in its being prefent, either more than God, or equal with God, that creature is another god unto him. And hence it is, that voluptuous men are said to make their belly their god, Phil. iii. 19. In a word, whatsoever the mind of man is carried after, or his heart and affections fet upon, either more, or as much as upon God, that he makes his god. And therefore, we may undoubted ly conclude, that all the fins before men tioned, are forbidden in this commandment.
