THE JOURNAL OF EDUCA

TION will contain Essays on Education in general, and on the best mode of teaching particular branches of knowledge.

It will also contain detailed accounts of Universities, Colleges, and Schools, with remarks on the changes that from time to time are made in the general plan of instruction, and the discipline in such institutions. Suitable remarks on any striking merits or defects in establishments for Education will accompany the description of their origin, constitution, and present state.

Reviews of Books used in practical instruction will form an important part of the Journal: they will be examined completely, impartially, and with good temper; the only object of the Committee being to furnish

teachers and learners with the means of

choosing the best books for themselves and their pupils.

To make the Journal complete, it will be necessary to reserve some portion of it for a variety of short notices which are not comprehended in the part already described.

It will not be possible to examine all the Institutions for Education, or all the Books used in instruction, and yet some short account of them will be essential for the purpose of collecting and registering many useful and interesting facts.

Under the different heads of England, Scotland, Ireland, France, &c., there will be found short notices-of the publication or. announcement of Works likely to be usefulof the foundation of new Schools or Colleges, or Societies for the promotion of Know

ledge-and in general such intelligence as

comes under the description of News, and is likely to interest and instruct all classes of readers. It will be necessary to state, at the head of this " News Department," that the Committee pass no judgments on the books mentioned, but merely state the fact of publication, &c., with such other remarks as may briefly explain their subjects and contents
