CHAP. X. Of Effectual Calling.

LL those whom God hath predeftinated unto life, and thofe only, he is pleased, in his appointed and accepted time, effectually to call a, by his word and Spirit b, out of that ftate of fin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and falvation by Jefus Chrift c; enlightening

fect. 1 John iii. 2. Beloved, now are we the fons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know, that when he shall appear, we fhall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Jude 24. No unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultlefs, before the prefence of his glory with exceeding joy..

I. a Rom. viii. 30. Moreover, whom he did predeftinate, them he alfo called and whom he called, them he alfo juftified and whom he juftified, them he alfo glorified. Rom. xi. 7. What then? Ifrael hath not obtained that which he feeketh for but the election hath obtained it, and the reft were blinded. Eph. i. 10. That in the difpenfation of the fulness of times, he might gather together in one all things in Chrift, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth, even in him. v. II. In whom alfo we have obtained an inheritance, being predeftinated according to the purpofe of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, becaufe God hath from the beginning chofen you to falvation, through fanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth: v. 14. ye are manifeftly declared to be the epistle of Chrift, ministered by us written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God: not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

v. 6. Who alfo made us able ministers of the new teftament, not of the letter, but of the Spirit: for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.

c Rom. viii. 2. For the law of the Spirit of life, in Chrift Jefus, hath made me free from the law of fin and death. Eph. ii. 1. And you hath he quickened who were dead in trefpaffes and fins. v. 2. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the fpirit that now worketh in the children of difobedience. V. 3. A. mong whom alfo we all had our converfation in times paft, in the lufts of our flesh, fulfilling the defires of the flesh, and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. V. 4. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us. v. 5. Even when we were dead in fins, hath quickened us together with Chrift, (by grace ye are faved.) 2 Tim.i. 9. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the faints.

And I will put my Spirit within you, and caufe you to walk in my ftatutes, and ye fhall keep my judgments, and do them.

Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

This effectual call is of God's free and fpecial grace alone, not from any thing at all foreseen in man i, who is altogether paffive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit k, he is thereby enabled to anfwer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it ..

III. Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and faved by Chrift through the Spirit m, who worketh when,

of fin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? v. 17. But God be thanked, that ye were the fervants of fin; but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. v. 18. Being then made free from fin, ye became the fervants of righteouf nefs.

II. i 2 Tim.i.9. Who hath faved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Chrift Jefus, before the world began. Tit. iii, 4. But after that the kindnefs and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared. v. 5. Not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghoft. Eph. ii. 4. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us. v. 5. Even when we were dead in fins hath quickened us together with Chrift, (by grace ye are faved.) v. 8. For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: v. 9. Not of works, left any man fhould boaft. Rom. ix. 11. For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpofe of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not fubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Eph. ii. 5. Verily verily I fay unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead fhall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear fhall live.

III. m Luke xviii. 15. And they brought unto him alfo infants, that he would touch them : but when his difciples faw it, they rebuked them. v. 16. But Jefus called them unto him, and faid, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of fuch is the kingdom of God. And Acts ii. 38. Then Peter faid unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jefus Chrift, for the remiffion of fins, and ye fhall receive the gift of the Holy Ghoft. v. 39. For the promife is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord your God

and where, and how he pleaseth n. So alfo are all other elect perfons, who are incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the word o.

IV. Others not elected, although they may be called by the miniftry of the word p, and may have fome common operations of the Spirit q; yet they never truly come unto Chrift, and therefore cannot be faved r: much lefs can men, not profeffing the Chriftian religion, be faved in any other way whatfover, be they never fo diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do profefs f; and

Jefus anfwered, Verily verily I fay unto thee, except a man be born of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. And 1 John v. 12. He that hath the Son, hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life. And Rom. viii. 9. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if fo be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Chrift, he is none of his. (Compared together.)

7 John iii. 8. The wind bloweth where it lifteth, and thou hearest the found thereof, but canft not tell whence it cometh, and whether it goeth: fo is every one that is born of the Spirit.

• 1 John v. 12. He that hath the Son, hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life. Acts iv. 12. Neither is there falvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be faved.

IV. p Matth. xxii. 14. For many are called, but few are chofen.

And have tafted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come.

CHA P. XI. Of Juftification.

'HEM whom God effectually calleth, he alfo freel juftifieth a: not by infufing righteoufnefs into them but by pardoning their fins, and by accounting and ac cepting their perfons as righteous: not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Chrift's fake alone: not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience, to them as their righteoufnefs; but by imputing the obedience and fatiffaction of Chrift unto them b, they receiving and refting

falvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be faved. John xiv. 6. Jefus faith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me. Eph. ii. 12. That at that time ye were without Chrift, being aliens from the common wealth of Ifrael, and strangers from the covenants of promife, having no hope, and with out God in the world. * John iv. 22. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for falvation is of the Jews. John xvii. 3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jefus Chrift whom thou haft fent.

t2 John 9. Whofoever tranfgreffeth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Chrift, hath not God: he that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. v. 10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your houfe, neither bid him God fpeed. v. II. For he that biddeth him God fpeed, is partaker of his evil deeds.

I Cor. xvi. 22. If any man love not the Lord Jefus Chrift, let him be Anathema, Maranatha. Gal. i. 6. I marvel, that ye are fo foon removed from him that called you into the grace of Chrift, unto another gofpel: v. 7. Which is not another; but there be fome that trouble you, and would pervert the gofpel of Christ, v. 8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gofpel unto you, than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
