14 endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness 15 unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel

as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. He. iii. 5, 6. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. He. x. 39.

14 This gospel of the kingdom.] See chap. iv. 23. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Mat. ix. 35. As ye go (said Jesus), preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. x. 7. And now behold, I know that ye all among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God (said Paul) shall see my face no more. Ac.

xx. 25.

Shall be preached in all the world.] See chap. xxvi. 13. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mar. xvi. 15, 16. Thus it is written, that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 47. Ye shall receive power (after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you), and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Ro. x. 18. I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God. So that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ; yea, so have I strived to preach the Gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation; but as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see; and they that have not heard shall understand. Ro. xv. 18-21. Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, (according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret since the world began, but now is made manifest, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of

faith,) to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen. Ro. xvi. 25, 26. We give thanks to God for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which is come unto you, as it is in all the world, and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth. And you that were sometimes alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven, whereof 1, Paul, am made minister. Col. i. 3. 5, 6. 21. 23. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting Gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. Re. xiv. 6.

And then shall the end come.] See verses 3. 6. Thus saith the Lord God; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come; the end is come, the end is come; it watcheth for thee; behold it is come. The morning is come upon thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. Behold the day behold, it is come; the morning is gone forth, the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded. Ez. vii. 5, 6, 7. 10.

15 Ye therefore shall see the abomination, &c.] When ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet. standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains. Mar. xiii. 14. The days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side. Lu. xix. 43. And when ye shali see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. La xxi. 20.

By Daniel the prophet.] And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consumma tion, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Da. ix. 27. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh destlate set up, there shall be a thousand t hundred and ninety days. Da. xii. II.

the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand :) Then let them which be in Judea flee into the moun- 16

tains: Let him which is on the house top not come down to take 17

Whoso readeth, let him understand.] And the man said unto "me" ("Ezekiel"), Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel. Ez. xl. 4. At the beginning of thy supplications (said Gabriel to Daniel) the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee, for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. - Da. ix. 23. 25. Then he (after the hand touched me) said unto me, O Daniel, a man #greatly beloved, fear not; for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but lo, Michael, one of the chief of the princes, came to help me, and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days; for yet the vision is for many days. Da. x. 12, 13, 14. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. He. ii. 1. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein, for the time is at hand. Re. i. 3. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. Re. iii. 22.

16 Let them which be, &c.] When the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters which are here, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth and set him without the city. And it came to pass when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life, look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. Ge. xix. 15, 16, 17. He that feared the word of the Lord among the servants of Pharaoh, made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses. And he that regarded not the word of the Lord, left his

servants and his cattle in the field. Ex. ix. 20, 21. A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself, but the simple pass on and are punished. Pr. xxii. 3. O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beth-haccerem; for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction. Je. vi. 1. And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem, for fear of Pharaoh's army, then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people. Je. xxxvii. 11, 12. Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which were written may be fulfilled. Lu. xxi. 20, 21. By faith Noe, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. He. xi. 7.

17 Which is on the house-top.] Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment ? Mat. vi. 25. And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin; yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. Job ii. 4. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids: deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Pr. vi. 4, 5. Let him that is on the house-top not go down into the house, neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house. And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment. Mar. xiii. 15, 16. In that day, he which shall be upon the house-top, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. Lu. xvii. 30-33. The house-top.] What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light; and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the house-tops. Mat. x. 27. When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence. De. xxii. 8.

18 any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field 19 return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are 20 with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath-day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the

19 Woe unto them that are with child.] Thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons, and of thy daughters, which the Lord thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee: so that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children, which he shall leave; so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children, whom he shall eat; because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eyes shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter. De. xxviii. 53-56. And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet; he was five years old when the tidings came of (the death of) Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame, and his name was Mephibosheth. 2 Sa. iv. 4. Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof, from Tirzah; because they opened not to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein that were with child, he ripped up. 2 Ki. xv. 16. Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones. The daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst; the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children; they were their meat, in the destruction of the daughter of my people. Lam. iv. 3, 4. 10. Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. Ho. xiii. 16. But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days; and pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. Mar. xiii. 17, 18. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days; for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. Lu. xxi. 23. For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that

20 Neither on the sabbath-day.] that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days. Abide ye every man in his place: let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. Ex. xvi. 29. Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath-day's journey. Ac. i. 12.

21 Then shall be great tribulation.] Let their table become a snare before them; and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not, and make their loins continually to shake. Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them: let their habitations be desolate, and let none dwell in their tents For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded. Add iniquity unto their iniquity; and let them not come into thy righteousness: let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous. Ps. lxix. 22—28. Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter. Because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not therefore, thus saith the Lord God, Behold my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: behold my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for son ow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen, for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name. That he who blesseth himself in the earth, shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth, shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are bid from mine eyes. Is. lxv. 12-16. For behold the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots, like a whirlwind to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire, and by his sword, will the Lord plead with all flesh, and the slain of the Lord shall be many. Is. lxvi. 15, 16 And after three-score and two weeks shall

z beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And 22 except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elects' sake those days shall be shortened.

Messiah be cut off, but not for himself; and the people of the Prince that shall come shall destroy the city, and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood; and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Da. ix. 26. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people, and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. Da. xii. 1. Hear this, ye old men, and give ear all ye inhabitants of the land; hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? Joel i. 2. The day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand: a day of darkness, and of gloominess; a day of clouds, and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains : a great people and a strong, there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. Joel ii. 2. Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul loathed them, and their s soul also abhorred me. Then said I, I will not feed you; that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another. Zec. xi. 8, 9. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go into captivity; and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. Zec. xiv. 2, 3. For behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. Mal. iv. 1. For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. Mar. xiii. 19. The days shall come upon thee that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side: and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 43, 44. And they (the Jews) shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. Lu. xxi. 24. (The Jews) who

both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men. Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sin alway; for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 Th. ii. 15, 16. If we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment, and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law, died without mercy under two or three witnesses; of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? He. x. 26-29.

22 Except those days should be shortened.] Except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved; but for the elects' sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. Mar. xiii. 20.

For the elects' sake, &c.] But yet in " "it" ("the land") shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten; as a teil tree, and as an oak whose substance is in them when they cast their leaves, so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof. Is. vi. 13. Thus saith the Lord, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all. And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains; and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. Is. lxv. 8, 9. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, The Lord is my God. Zec. xiii. 9. Half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Zec. xiv. 2. (For the children (of Sara and Rebecca) being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.) It was said unto her (Rebecca), The elder shall serve the younger. Ro. ix. 11, 12. I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery (lest ye should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness, in part, is happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the deliverer, and shall turn

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; 24 believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that,

away ungodliness from Jacob. For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the Gospel, they are enemies for your sakes; but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance: for as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief, even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. Ro. xi. 25-31. Therefore I endure all things for the elects' sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 2 Ti. ii. 10.

23 Then if any man shall say unto you.] If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder; and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams. De. xiii. 1, 2, 3. Then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo he is there; believe him not. Mar. xiii. 21. And they shall say to you, See here! or see there! go not after them, nor follow them: for as the lightning that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. Lu. xvii. 23, 24. Take heed that ye be not deceived, for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and the time draweth near, go ye not therefore after them. Lu. xxi. 8. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John v. 43. 24 There shall arise false Christs.] See verses 5. 11. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction: and many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken

of.

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you, whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 1 Pe. ii. 1, 2, 3. Ye, therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware, lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 2 Pe. iii. 17. And shall shew great signs.] See verse 23. Then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness

of his coming: even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceiv ableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. 2 Tk. i 9-11. And "he" (“the beast with two horas like a lamb, and that spake as a dragon"); doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth; that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Re. xiii. 13, 14. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image; these both were cast alive into a lake of fire, burning with brinstone. Re. xix. 20.

Insomuch that.] All that the Father giveth me, shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. John vi. 37. 39. I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me is greater than all, and none is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand: I and my Father are one. John x. 28, 29, 30. We know that all things work together for good to them who are the called according to his purpose: for whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate, to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things! Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come : nor height, nor depth, nor any other
