And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars; see в that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass,

after him he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. Ac. v. 36, 37. But there was a certain man called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: to whom they all give heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is :the great power of God. Ac. viii. 9, 10. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship "him" ("the beast with seven heads"), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Re. xiii. 8.

6 Ye shall hear of wars.] My bowels, my bowels (said Jeremiah), I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me, I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war: destruction upon destruction is cried, for the whole land is spoiled; suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment. How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? For my people is foolish; they have not known me. They are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. Je. iv. 19-22. Thus saith the Lord, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion. We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble; anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Je. vi. 22, 23, 24. We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan; the whole land tremled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured he land, and all that is in it; the city, and hose that dwell therein. Je. viii. 15, 16. O hou sword of the Lord, how long will it be re thou be quiet? Put up thyself into thy cabbard; rest, and be still. Je. xlvii. 6. Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heahen, and they shall possess their houses. will also make the pomp of the strong to ease, and their holy places shall be defiled. Destruction cometh; and they shall seek eace, and there shall be none. Mischief shall ome upon mischief, and rumour shall be Then shall they seek a vision pon rumour. f the prophet; but the law shall perish from he priest, and counsel from the ancients. Ex. ii. 24, 25, 26. If I bring a sword on that

land, and say, Sword, go through the land, so that I cut off man and beast from it, though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves. Or, if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast, though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness. For thus saith the Lord God, How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast? Ez. xiv. 17-21. Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord, say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. Cry and howl, son of man; for it shall be upon my people; it shall be upon all the princes of Israel; terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people. Smite, therefore, upon thy thigh. Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod ? it shall be no more, saith the Lord God. Thou, therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together; and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain. It is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers. I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter. Ex. xxi. 9. 11–15. And thou, son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord God concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering. Ez. xxi. 28. The king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities; and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand, &c. &c. Da. xi. 15. When ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled, for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be earthquakes in divers places; and there shall be famines and troubles; these are the beginnings of sorrows. Mar. xiii. 7, 8. But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified, for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Lu. xxi. 9.

See that ye be not troubled.] The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom

7 but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and

shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes came upon me, to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. Ps. xxvii. 1, 2, 3. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble; therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea: though the waters thereof roar, and be troubled; though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Ps. xlvi. 1, 2, 3. He (the good man) shall not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord. Ps. cxii. 7. Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary but for a stone of stumbling; and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Is. viii. 12, 13, 14. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Is. xii. 2. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee, hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. Is. xxvi. 3, 4. 20. 21. When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice, rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops. Although the fig-tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls; yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Hab. iii. 16-19. In your patience possess ye your souls. Lu. xxi. 19. Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you: let not your heart

be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John xiv. 1. 27. Now we beseech you, brethren, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2 The. ii. 2. But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye; and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. 1 Pe. iii. 14, 15.

Must come to pass.] How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled (said Jesus to him who smote the servant of the high priest), that thus it must be? Mat. xxi. 54. For I say unto you, That this that is written must yet be accomplished in me; and he was reckoned among the transgressors, for the things concerning me have an end. Lu. xxii. 37. Fear not, Paul (said the angel); thou must be brought before Cesar; and lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, Sirs, be of good cheer; for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me. Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island. Ac xxvii. 24, 25, 26.

But the end is not yet.] See verse 14. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the trans gression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophesy, and to anoint the most holy. Know, therefore, and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks. The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks, shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unte the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shail be poured upon the desolate. Da. ix. 24–77. 7 Nation shall rise against nation.] And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city (said the prophet Azariah, to Asa, king Judah), for God did vex them with all adversity. 2 Ch. xv. 6. Through the wrath the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother. And he shall

snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. Is. ix. 19, 20, 21. Yet I will distress Ariel (the city where David dwelt), and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel. Is. xxix. 2. I will overturn, overturn, overturn "it" ("Jerusalem"), and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it "him" ("the king of Babylon"). Ez. xxi. 27. Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. Hag. ii. 21, 22. I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, md his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. Ze. xiv. 2, 3. 13. And this word (of Christ) yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken; as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. He. xii. 27.

Famines, and pestilences.] The earth is uterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, he earth is moved exceedingly. The earth hall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and hall be removed like a cottage, and the transression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and It shall fall, and not rise again. And it shall ome to pass in that day, that the Lord shall unish the host of the high ones that are on igh, and the kings of the earth upon the arth.

And they shall be gathered together, s prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall e shut up in the prison, and after many days hall they be visited. Is. xxiv. 19-23. How uch more when I send my four sore judgents upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the amine, and the noisome beast, and the pestience, to cut off from it man and beast? Ez. iv. 21. And I will shew wonders in the eavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and VOL. II.

pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come. Joel ii. 30, 31. And his (Christ's) feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof, toward the east, and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. Zec. xiv. 4. And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth, For the powers of heaven shall be shaken, Lu. xxi. 11. 25, 26. And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. Ac. ii. xix. And there stood up one of " them " ("the prophets from Jerusalem "), named Agabus, and signified by the spirit, that there should be great dearth throughout all the world which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar. Ac. xi. 28.

8 These are the beginning, &c.] If ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass and your strength shall be spent in vain for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you, according to your sins. I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight; and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me, then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I,

will chastise you seven times for your sins. And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. Le. xxvi. 18-29. If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, the Lord thy God; then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, &c. De. xxviii. 58, 59. The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. They shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. Is. ix. 12. 17. 21. Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. Is. x. 4. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon

a

woman with child; and they shall not escape. The. v. 3. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 1 Pe. iv. 17, 18.

9 Shall they deliver you up, &c.] See chap. x. 17. 22. And the remnant (of those bidden to the marriage) took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. Mat. xxii. 6. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake; but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mar. xiii. 12, 13. I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute (said the wisdom of God). Lu. xi. 49. But before all these (signs) they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death; and ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. Lu.

xxi. 12. 16, 17. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord: if they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you. John xv. 19, 20. (The rulers of the Jews) being grieved that “they” (“ Peter and John") taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead (came upon them). And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day. Ac. iv. 2, 3. And they (the apostles) departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Ac. v. 40, 41. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit Aç. vii. 59. As they (the Jews of Asia) went about to kill him (Paul), tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusa lem was in an uproar, who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them; and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. Ac. xxi. 31, 32. And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen (said Paul) was shed, I also was standing by and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. Ac. xxii. 20. "We" ("the Jews at Rome") desire to hear of thee what “thou” ("Paul") thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. Ac. xxviii. 22. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews. who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets; and have persecuted us. And they please not God, and are contrary to all mea; forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway; for wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 The. ii. 14, 15, 16. Yet if y man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 1 Pe. iv. 16. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer. Behold, the Devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. I knew thy works, and where thou dwellest, eers where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. Re. ii. 10. 13. When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the

name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray 10 one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets 11 shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall 12 abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall 13

altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held and they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also, and their brethren that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled. Re. vi. 9, 10, 11. And "he" ("one of the elders") said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Rev. vii. 14.

Jesus

10 Shall many be offended.] See chap. xi. 6: xiii. 21. Peter said unto him (Jesus), Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Mat. xxvi. 33, 34. These are they likewise which are sown on stony ground, who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness, and have no root in themselves, and so endure for a time; afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. Mar. iv. 17. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? John vi. 67. Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia; Titus unto Dalmatia. At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me; I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. 2 Ti. iv. 10. 16.

Betray one another.] See chap. x. 21. 35, 36. And as "they" ("the disciples") did eat, "he" ("Jesus") said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him; but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It had been good for that man if he had not been born. Mat. xxvi. 21-24.

11 Many false prophets, &c.] See verses 5. 24. chap. vii. 15. Little children, it is the last time; and as ye have heard that Antichrist shall come, even now are there many Antichrists, whereby we know that it is the last time. These things have I written unto you, concerning them that seduce you. I John ii. 18. 26. For there are certain men

crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 4.

12 Because iniquity shall abound.] Whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not; ye kill and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not; ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Ja. iv. 1-4. Go to, now, ye rich men, weep and howl, for your miseries shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten; your gold and silver is cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire: ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth; and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton: ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter: ye have condemned and killed the just, and he doth not resist you. Ja. v. 1—6.

The love of many shall wax cold.] Nevertheless, I have somewhat against "thee" ("the church of Ephesus"), because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer; behold the Devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Re. ii. 5, 6. 10. I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot. Re. iii. 15.

13 He that shall endure, &c.] See verse 6. chap. x. 22. (Ye are enriched by him, Jesus Christ) Waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Co. i. 7, 8. Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after. But Christ
