PUBLISHERS' NOTE.

This is a highly pictorial age. The elements are called into requisition to add variety and accuracy in this department of art. The sunlight that paints the landscape is busily employed with inimitable skill in painting human portraits. The eye rests and gazes with artistic pleasure upon the productions of both.

In issuing the third Edition of this very instructive and graphic picture of "LIFE'S PHASES," the Publishers have thought to please the reader, and impart additional interest to the book itself by embellishing it with a well-executed and life-like portrait of the author. To accomplish this, the sunlight was invoked, to do the photographing with native skill, and Mr. Sartain, a true son of artistic genius, has done the rest. Both were done to order for the third edition of this book, for which the author incurs no responsibility, save a bare consent to show her face to the kind reader of her story.

The publishers beg leave to commend this very interesting book to the reading public, with the confident assurance that it will be found an instructive, safe, and welcome companion in all the families and family circles which it is invited to enter.
