PREFACE.

THE Discourses in the present volume have been collected from reports in "THE SPIRITUAL TELEGRAPH" and "THE BANNER OF LIGHT." Those reports were taken down from off-hand delivery, and are, I presume, as correct a re-production of what I said at the time as can be given of the ideas of one who speaks as rapidly as I do. I can especially commend the general accuracy of Mr. Burr's reports. I can not, however, vouch for the language in all instances. Indeed, these Discourses are likely to exhibit at least the faults of extemporaneous productions; and there are undoubtedly forms of speech, and entire passages, which would have appeared in a different shape had they been carefully penned in my study, instead of being struck out upon the instant at white heat. In extemporaneous discourses, too, more than in written ones, must we miss the personal magnetism and the force of delivery, which give them a peculiar influence at the time when they are spoken. However, I have looked over the contents of these pages, with some attempts at revision, and, such as they are, I now send them forth, trusting that God may bless them, and that they may help do His work.

NEW YORK, January 23d, 1860.
