DIVINITY SCHOOL. TERMS OF ADMISSION. Candidates must sustain a good character and have a sincere purpose to devote their lives to the Christian ministry. Bachelors of Arts are admitted without examination. Other applicants must have received a good English education, including especially History, English Literature, and the Greek Language. It is recommended that those proposing a course in Theology shall take, as preliminary, a full collegiate course of study. To meet the wants of such as are unable to make so extensive preparation, a four-years' course has been instituted. This permits the introduction of branches which, though not strictly professional, have yet been approved by long experience as fundamental and of the highest disciplinary value. It is hoped that four years spent upon a continuous course, where the studies are made to succeed each other in logical order and with constant reference to the requirements of the profession, will prove sufficient to equip a young man for his work. COURSE OF INSTRUCTION. The regular course of instruction occupies three years for Bachelors of Arts; for others a four-years' course is provided; and for exceptional cases, special courses of one, two, or three years. The subjects of study are the same that are usually pursued in Divinity Schools of the first rank. Some latitude, however, is given for the operation of special tastes or abilities, by the opportunity for elective or extra work, either with the professors of this department or with those of the College of Letters. DEGREES. The degree of Bachelor of Divinity is conferred on Bachelors of Arts who sustain satisfactorily an examination upon the studies of the regular course, and upon others who complete the four-years' course with distinction. EXPENSES AND PECUNIARY AID. Tuition, room-rent, and use of furniture, free. Board may be had at about $4.00 per week. The General Convention of Universalists aids students by a system of loans. The COLLEGE is situated on a beautiful eminence four miles from Boston, combining the advantages of country and city. It offers to the student in all its departments the best methods of instruction and the various facilities requisite for a thorough education, at a very moderate cost. It was the first New England college to accept advanced French or German as equivalent for Greek in a course leading to the degree of A.B., and to offer the student so entering a full course in the Greek language. A new departure is the award of the bachelor's degree on the basis of attainment instead of the number of years spent in college. Great freedom of election is permitted in the new courses, which provide both for general culture and for specialization in a chosen subject and its related studies. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION. COURSES IN LIBERAL ARTS. The first Two groups of requirements admit to the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. includes Latin Grammar, four books of Cæsar, seven orations of Cicero, six books of Virgil, 2500 lines of the Metamorphoses of Ovid, and Latin Composition; Greek Grammar, four books of Xenophon's Anabasis, three books of Homer's Iliad, and Greek Composition; elementary German or French; Arithmetic, Algebra, and Plane Geometry; History, Ancient, with Medieval and Modern, or that of England and the United States; English Grammar and Composition. Candidates entering under the second group of requirements substitute advanced German or advanced French for the Greek requirements, and must offer an elementary preparation, in French, if advanced German is offered, in German, if advanced French. Two groups of requirements admit to the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. The first of these includes Latin, Mathematics, History, and English, as above; with intermediate German and elementary French, or intermediate French and elementary German. The second group is made up of Mathematics, History, and English, as in the first, with advanced German and elementary French, or advanced French and elementary German, or intermediate French and intermediate German; Physics, Chemistry, and Natural History. This group is intended to meet the preparation of graduates of the best English high schools, who desire to take a college course. Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy may obtain the degree of Bachelor of Arts by doing twenty-four term hours of additional work and complying with the other conditions pertaining to that degree. ENGINEERING COURSES. These courses lead to the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, or Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. The requirements for admission are Arithmetic, Algebra, Plane and Solid Geometry, English, and elementary German or French.
