SCRIPTURE COMMENTATORS. 319 ciency which exists in the American Encyclopedia. The Library of Christian Knowledge is a deserving publication edited by Rev. Herman Hooker, author of the Portion of the Soul, &c. We may add here, what might more properly have been introduced in another place, that several popular books designed to explain and illustrate the Scriptures, have issued from the American press within a short period. Among these, is the Comprehensive Commentary, which combines the labours of several writers on the Bible and on biblical literature. Valuable aid has been rendered to the editor, Rev. William Jenks, by Rev. L. I. Hoadley, J. W. Jenks, and others. It is well calculated to answer the end in view, as a practical and family commentary, and in some degree as a critical and learned exposition of the Bible. In this department, also, the publications of Prof. Bush, Rev. Albert Barnes, and others, have received much consideration from the religious public.* Books of the popular, comprehensive character above described, have lately multiplied with such rapidity in the United States, that all classes of the people may find a cheap and ready access to every species of knowledge.* *AM.
