Afvisay (andrew michael), frequently f'cyled the Chevalier Ramfay, a polite writer, was a Scotfman of an ancientfamily; and vas born at Ayre in that kingdom, june 9, 1686. He received the firf't part of his education at Ayre, and was then removed to Edinburgh, where, dif'rin giiiihing himfelf hyb ooocl parts and uncommon proficiency, he was fent for to St Andr'ew s, in 01de1 to attend a fon of the earl Of Weems in that univeriity. After this, he travelled to Holland, and went to Leyden: where falling into the ac quaintance of Poiret a celebrated mvfiic divine, he became tiriétured with his doéltrincs; and refolved for farther fatis faf'tion to confult Fenelon, the famed archbifhop of Cam bray, who had long imbibed the fundamental principles of that theology. Before he left Scotland, he had conceived a difguft to the religion in which he was bred; and In that ill humour, calling his eye upon other Chriftian churches, and feeing none to his liking, he became difpleafed with all, and gave into De1fm. During his abode in Holland, he grew more confirmed In that v: ay of thinking yet without coming to any fixed determination. In this unfettled ftate of mind, he arrived at Cambray 111 1710, and was received with great kindnefs bv the archbitp, who took him into his family, heard with pat1ence and attention the billory of his religious pr1nc iples, entered heartily wrth him into a difcufiion of them, and, to be fbort, in fix months time made l11m as good a Ca tholic as himfelf.
