A treasure trove of rhymes, el al. Depending on where and when you grew up, this should refresh your memory on many of the songs and rhymes that you knew as a kid. I venture to say that much, if not most, of these little pieces are disappearing. Maybe that's inevitable—after all we've probably lost the little rhymes and songs that commonly entertained people two hundred years ago in the United States. But that doesn't make it any less sad to those of us who are old enough to witness these gems being forgotten.
There is only issue I have with this publication; I wish Ms. Schiller, or her editors, had included more details. For example, the song, "Daisy Bell," which is called "A Bicycle Built for Two" in this book, was composed in 1892 by Harry Dacre. Certainly it's old enough to be in the public domain, but Mr. Dacre should still have been given credit. And if there are parodies of the song in this book (there should be) they should be cross referencing each other.
Notwithstanding the lack of details, this is good reference and should be one of the must-haves for parents, teachers, and anyone who has children in their lives. Especially young children, yes, but I think many of these pieces can be shared with children older than six. -Alvin McGovern, Folk Singer and Teacher, IL
