PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION

'Pour bien écrire, il faut posséder pleinement son sujet.'-BUFFON.

THIS Second Course of French Composition, intended for advanced students, is on the whole framed on the same plan as the First Course. The gratifying recognition which the Elementary Course, now in its fifth edition, has met with at the hands of experienced teachers, bears ample testimony to the soundness and practical utility of a method which aims at welding composition with translation.

For this method to yield its full advantages it is, of course, indispensable that the subject-matter of the English passage set for composition should be kindred with some model extract in the foreign idiom. But it is not every student that has ready at hand a literary storehouse from which to select prototypes bearing upon exactly the same topics as those he is called upon to turn into French. To meet this want is the aim of the present Manual.

In the first division each English passage stands face to face with a parallel French Model Extract, intended to supply the student with brick and mortar adapted to the structure which it is his arduous task to build up.
