Prof B.K.Das's book Postmodern Indian English Literature is really an enjoyable work, especially for those who read and discuss the literature of this type. But in the course of reading the book, what I have found missing is an explanation of the very term 'postmodern'. Is the term postmodern used here only to mark a historical period? If so, then is it appropriate to say that postmodern period is barely a historical fragment indicating only the production of a period without referring to any inherent point of view? Such a suggestion misses the important point, that is, postmodern as an ideological approach, a point of view that is not history-specific, but an attitude that makes it different and opposite to waht we believe as modern, an attitude really post-modern. But there is another problem. If we consider the idea of postmoderneity in the Western sense and apply it in the case of Indian English literature, then we have to say where this literature proves to be postmodern. Without explaing these questions and taking the literature of a certain period as postmodern seems to be a case too much taken for granted. If the book could explain postmoernism and then apply the yardsticks of postmodernism to the Indian English Literature of the said period, the argument would have been better. Otherwise it is a fine work.
