trodden down all them that err said, Wherefore now do ye trans- fore the LORD will not be with you. 2 Sam. ii, 39. .... The LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. Job xxi, 28, 29, 31, 32, 34. For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling-places of the wicked? Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens. Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done? Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood? Job xxxi, 2. 3. For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? Job xxxiv, 26, 27. He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others; Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways. the Job xxxvi, 17. But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee. Ps. 1. 4. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Ps. i, 5. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. Ps. ix, 16. The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is spared in the work of his own hands. Higgalon. Selah. Ps. xxxiv, 21. Evil shall slay the wicked; and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. Ps. xxxvii, 20, 38. But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs; they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; the end of the wicked shall be cut of. Ps. lxviii, 21. But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses. P3. caix, 118-120. Thou hast neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. Jer. xxiii, 19, 20. Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. Jer. xxx, 14, 15, 22, 23. All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not: for I have wounded with the chastisement of a cruel thee with the wound of an enemy, one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased. Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were inCreased, I have done these things unto thee. And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind; it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. Jonah ii, 8. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare. Ezek. vii, 3, 4, 8, 9. Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all And mine thine abominations. thine abominations shall be in the Ezek. ix, 10, 11. And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head. man And, behold, the clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me. Ezek. xxiv, 13, 14. In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till upon thee. I have caused my fury to rest I the LORD have spoken it; it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent: according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD. Micah vi, 16. For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk make thee a desolation, and the in their counsels; that I should inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ve shall bear the reproach of my people. NATIONAL DISASTER. Deut. xxviii, 45-47. Moreover, all and shall pursue thee, and overthese curses shall come upon thee, take thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto keep his commandments and his the voice of the LORD thy God, to statutes which he commanded thee: And they shall be upon thee for a sign, and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abund- I have called unto them, but they ance of all things. 1 Sam. xii, 15. But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the command ment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers. Isaiah i, 20. But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured by the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. Isaiah xxx, 1. Woe to the rebel Hous children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin. Jer. xi, 8. Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not. Jer. xii, 17. But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD. Jer. xxv, 29, 31. For, lo. I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.. He will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD. Jer. xxvi, 4-7. And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, If ye will not hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you, To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened; Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth. So the priests and the prophets, and all the people, heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. Jer. xxxv, 16, 17. Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me: Therefore, thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and i】 have not answered. Ezek. xxi, 24. Therefore thus saith the Lord GoD, Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand. Hosca viii, 1. Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. Hosea ix, 9, 17. They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins. My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations. AND DEATH IN EVERY SENSE. Gen. vi. 13. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them: and, behold I will destroy them with the earth. shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. Ps. Ixli, 3. How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence. Ps. xcii, 9. For, lo, thine enemies O LORD, for, shall perish; all the workers of lo, thine enemies iniquity shall be scattered. shall be cut off from the earth, Prov. ii, 22. But the wicked and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it. Isaiah i, 28. And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed. Isaiah v, 23, 24. Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have Num. xxvii, 13,14. DELIVERANCE FROM THE CURSE AND POWER OF SIN. Matth. xviii, 11. For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. Luke ix, 56. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. Luke xix, 10. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. John iii, 17. For God sent not his Sou into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. Acts iv, 12. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Rom. vi, 18, 22. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 1 Cor. i, 30, 31. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and right eousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Gal. i, 4. Who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father. Gal. iii, 13. Christ bath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Gal. iv, 1. Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all. 1 Tim. i, 15. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Titus ii, 14. Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 1 John iv. 9.14, In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. And | Verily, verily, I say unto you, we have seen, and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 1 Cor. i, 4-6, 30. I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: But of God is made unto us wisdom, of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. 2 Cor. xii, 9. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Eph. iii, 18, 19. May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know knowledge, that ye the love of Christ, which passeth might be filled with all the fulness of God. Phil. iv, 13. I can do all things through Christ which strengthen eth me. be full. Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have belived that I came out from God. John xvii, 11, 20. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. Rom. viii, 34. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea, rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right Land of God, who also maketh intercession for us. boldness and access with contidEph. iii, 12. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Heb. ix, 15, 24. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Heb. xii, 24. John xv, 1, 2, 4, 5. I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away; and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. John xvi, 33. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Rom. viii, 8--10. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteous ness. Rom. xli, 5. So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 1 Cor. ii, 16. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. • 1 Cor. xii, 12. 27. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 2 Cor. xiii 3. Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you. Eph. 1, 9, 10, 21--23. Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he hath purposed In himself: That in the dispensa also in that which is to come; And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church. Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. which more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building, Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh; How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works, to serve the living God? Eph. iv, 15, 16. But, speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom 1 Peter i, 18--20. Eph. v, 29, 30. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Col. i, 18. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Col. ii, 10. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power. Heb. ii, 11--13. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren. Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Eph. i, 7. 8. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence. Heb. ix, 11-14. But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and Rev. v, 9. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. 1 Cor. vi, 20. THE DEATH OF CHRIST PRE DETERMINED. Luke ix, 30, 31. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. John xviii, 31, 32. Then sald Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. John xix, 11. Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. Acts iii, 18. But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Ps. xxil, 1, 16. From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matth. xvii, 22, 23. And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. But first must he unto him the twelve, and said unto John xii, 32--34. And I, if I be NARRATIVE OF CHRIST'S Mark viii, 30-33. And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must sulfer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him. But when he had Heb. ii, 17, 18. Wherefore in all turned about and looked on his things it behoved nun to be made disciples, he rebuked Peter say-like unto his rethren, that he THE PRIESTHOOD OF might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. Heb. iii, 1, 2. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the hea venly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. Heb. iv, 14, 15. Seeing then that that is passed into the heavens, we have have a great high priest, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold not an high priest which cannot fast our profession. For we have be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. v, 6. 7. 10. As he saith also in another place. Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedec: Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with that was able to save him from strong crying and tears, unto him death, and was heard in that he feared. For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandament, but after the power of an endless life. For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedec. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. And inasmuch as not with out an oath he was made priest: |
