Biographia Literaria has emerged over the last century as a supreme work of literary criticism and one of the classics of English literature. The Biographia not only survived but continued to incite a deep respect, though
often for different reasons. And it has lost none of its interest (though the interest
now is almost as much human as intellectual) in the transition still taking place ...
But to a high degree the strength of the book is due to his realisation that each
step in his career stemmed from "a more thorough revolution in my philosophic
principles".7 An impartial and solid "philosophic reason, independent of all
organizing (as it were) the flux of the Senses by the permanence and self-circling
energies of the Reason, gives birth to a system of symbols, harmonious in
themselves, and consubstantial with the truths, of which they are the conductors.
On another plane, the new critical philosophy from Germany realigned everything
to an altered and truer bearing, correcting, so to speak, the difference between
the magnetic and true north. Reason, aesthetics, even religion gained by it.
That activity itself, that imagination, was the main reason for the bright view —
man possessed a productive and creative power that could join him to the world.
