Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. ON NUMBEKS--THEIE MEANING. It is now necessary that I should produce some good circumstantial evidence that the ministry of our Lord was exactly 3-3 years, and that his life was exactly ten times this, or 33-3 years, and that this is the unit of measurement on God's clock, by which all times have been fixed; for "by measure hath he measured the times, and by number hath he numbered the times; and he doth not move nor stir them until the said measure be fulfilled." And that though we are not positively told that Daniel's 70 weeks or hebdomads mean 70 times 33-3 years, still that there is sufficient ground for us to assume that it does; and that this is the key which opens to us the meaning of that apparently indefinite prophecy of our Lord, "And they shall fall "by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away "captive into all nations; and Jerusalem shall be "trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the "Gentiles be fulfilled."- In order to do this, let us, in this chapter, examine God's words and works, and see if He uses numbers indiscriminately, or if He works in this also according to law. I hope to be able to show that each number, from 1 to 10 and 12, has its own 2 Esdras iv. 37. t Luke xxi. 24. peculiar meaning; and to produce a sufficient number of instances in which that meaning, being invariably carried out, makes the rule, to my mind, conclusive. The reader may, if he pleases, think out for himself more and more instances; for they are too numerous to be all mentioned in this work. One is God: He is One Lord, and His name One; He is the Circle, the only figure formed by One Line, complete in itself, without beginning and without end, beyond everything, embracing everything within itself.
