As to Contributions, in this table it will be seen that it is more an exhibit of the number of churches reporting than of actual sums contributed. Previous to our issue of 1867 not half of the churches reported Contributions; many States did not put the item in their schedules.

In the above table, the "new" churches are occasionally such as were previously "dropped." The changes in "Benevolent Contributions" are greatly due to more or less full reports.

See table next above for number of churches reporting year by year.

'Acting Pastors” were included in "Without Charge," in column of deaths, until 1873.

Decrease.

REMARKS UPON THE ANNUAL STATISTICS.

STATES.- Florida is added to the list of States in which Congregationalism is represented. CHURCHES. - The number given last year, 3,438. Net increase (123 new, less 52 dropped as in Summary IV), 71. Present number, 3,509, as in Summary I.

CHURCH MEMBERS. Last year, 338,313. Net increase (12,664 increase in thirty-three States, less 319 decrease in eight States, as in Summary IV), 12,345. Present number, 350,658, as in Summary II.

IN SABBATH SCHOOLS. Last year, 401,838. Net increase (14,808 increase in twenty-five States, less 1,554 decrease in twelve States, as in Summary IV), 13,254. Present number, 415,092, as in Summary III.

BENEVOLENT CONTRIBUTIONS.- Last year, $1,241,014.39. Net increase ($94,243.35 increase in sixteen States, less $57,005.64 decrease in sixteen States, as in Summary IV), $37,237.71. Amount this year, $1,278,252.10, as in Summary III. This is the amount reported by 2,635 churches.

In the Summary of each State an additional statement of Benevolent Contributions has been added the present year, giving the amount contributed to each of the Congregational Societies and to miscellaneous objects. This statement is made up from the reports of the different societies named, with the exception of that of the Congregational Publishing Society, and from the returns given in the State Minutes. The amount of Benevolent Contributions according to this statement is as follows:

Foreign Missions, credited to the several States, $409,360.69,- adding to this the Donations for Debt, $40,463.60, and Centennial Donations, $7,037.95; total, $456,862.24; Home Missions, $383,632.08; Am. Miss. Association, $168,813.51; Am. Cong. Union, $46,386.11; Am. Coll. and Ed. Society, $63,154.88; Cong. Pub. Society (reported by the several States, $3,451.37, additional reported by the Society, $1,658.68), $5,110.05. Total for denominational work, $1,123,958.87; Miscellaneous (reported by 2,635 churches), $415,183.36. TOTAL, $1,539,142.23. This varies from the amount reported above, because it includes the contributions of a greater number of churches, and because the financial year of the societies does not cover the same period exactly as is embraced in the reports of the different State Minutes. The amount contributed to Home Missions includes $45,922.83 for boxes of clothing acknowl edged in The Home Missionary, and $30,606.28 reported in the Massachusetts Minutes, as given to local missions. The total amount given to miscellaneous objects is much larger than the sum here reported.

COMPARISONS. I. As to Churches.-1. The average increase in the number of churches for nineteen years has been about 63. The gain this year is 71.

2. The increase in membership is greater than in any other year since the record was com menced.

3. The number of additions by profession is larger than in any other year since 1859.

II. As to Ministers.—1. The number does not increase as fast as the number of churches. The number of pastors remains the same as the previous year; the number of acting pastors has increased.

2. The majority of ordinations without installation waxes worse and worse.

3. The number of deaths of ministers is 64.

III. As to Sabbath Schools. The number connected with the schools has advanced every year except in 1865.

IV. As to Benevolent Contributions. The amount reported is greater than in any other year except in 1872.

LIST OF CONGREGATIONAL MINISTERS IN THE UNITED STATES.

REPORTED BY THE SEVERAL STATE ORGANIZATIONS.

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL, in 1871, unanimously adopted the following:

"Resolved, That all ministers in our denomination ought to be in orderly connection with some ministerial or ecclesiastical organization, which shall be able to certify to their regular standing in the ministry."

The following appears among the BY-LAWS :

"The Council approves of an annual compilation of the statistics of the churches, and of a list of such ministers as are reported by the several State organizations."

The following list, in conformity to the above, is made up from the alphabetical lists printed by the State Associations and Conferences (not from the preceding tables), sometimes changed by letters from the Secretaries, with the names of persons regularly ordained since the issue of the State Minutes, or under commission from the American Home Missionary Society or the American Missionary Association. Any omissions (unless by accident) are due to the fact that no organization reported the names of the omitted.

Licentiates are not included in this list, nor are ministers of other denominations, unless they are also members of some Congregational organization, although they may be temporarily supplying our churches. A list of Licentiates follows this.

Names without post-office address are followed by the name of the State reporting them, in parenthesis.

Letters for foreign missionaries are forwarded by the respective Boards. See Missionary Herald and American Missionary for particular directions.
