3 There if thy Spirit touch the soul, And grace her mean abode, Oh, with what peace, and joy and love, She communes with her God! 4 There, like the nightingale, she pours Her solitary lays; Nor asks a witness of her song, 5 Author and Guardian of my life, Sweet source of light divine, 6 What thanks I owe thee, and what love, A boundless, endless store, XLVI. JESUS my all. 1 WHY should I fear the darkest hour, Or tremble at the tempter's pow'r? JESUS Vouchsafes to be my tow'r. 2 Though hot the fight, why quit the field? Why must I either flee or yield, 3 When creature-comforts fade and 4 Though all the flocks and herds were dead, My soul a famine need not dread, 1 Oн, speak that gracious word again, | 4 How oft did Satan's cruel boast And cheer my drooping heart, No voice but thine can sooth my pain, Or bid my fears depart. 2 And canst thou still vouchsafe to Own A wretch so vile as I? 3 Oh, then let saints and angels join, * Isa. xlviii. 8. My troubled soul affright! He told me I was surely lost, And God had left me quite. 5 Guilt made me fear, lest all were true The lying tempter said; 6 My Saviour, by his pow'rful word, 7 Dear Lord, I wonder and adore, Thy grace is all divine; Oh keep me, that I sin no more LIV. Hear what he has done for my Soul. 1 SAV'D by blood, I live to tell [done; | 3 What the love of Christ hath He redeem'd my soul from hell, Of a rebel made a son: 2 In his own appointed hour, To my heart the Saviour spoke : Touch'd me by his Spirits' pow'r, And my dang'rous slumber broke. Then I saw and own'd my guilt: Soon my gracious Lord reply'd, "Fear not, I my blood have spilt, ""Twas for such as thee I dy'd." Shame and wonder, joy and love, 4 Come, my fellow-sinners, try; All is ready, all is free: LV. Freedom from Care. 1 WHILE I liv'd without the Lord, (If I might be said to live,) Nothing could relief afford, Nothing satisfaction give. 2 Empty hopes and groundless fear Mov'd, by turns, my anxious mind; Like a feather in the air, Made the sport of ev'ry wind. 3 Now, I see, whate'er betide, All is well, if Christ be mine; 4 When a sense of sin and thrall LVI. Humiliation and Praise. I WHEN the wounded spirit hears Pardon, grace, and peace, proclaim'd, And the sinner call'd a child; Then the stubborn heart is tan'd, Renew'd, and reconcil'd. *Psalm lv. 22. 1 Pet. v. 7. 2 Oh! 'twas grace indeed, to spare And wait to show thy grace. 3 If, in one created mind, The tenderness and love With all the hosts above; A heart so vile as mine. 4 Wondrous mercy I have found, Yet produce thee only leaves ! The thought my spirit grieves. 5 Heavy charges Satan brings "Tis thy promise bids me come; Tell him thou hast paid for all, And that shall strike him dumb. LVII. C. For the Poor. 1 WHEN Hagar found the bottle spent, Aud wept o'er Ishmael; A message from the Lord was sent 2 Should not Elijah's cake and cruiset Convince us, at this day, A gracious God will not refuse 3 His saints and servants shall be fed, The promise is secure ; "Bread shall be giv'n them," as he said, "Their water shall be sure." 4 Repasts far richer, they shall prove, 5 To Jesus then your trouble bring, LVIII.
