the Berwick, Dover, and a large ship, which lately discharged a cargo of tar; thefe, and the Naffan, which lay along fide the Jetty, at the fame inftant felt the fhock, with this difference, that instead of pitching they rolled very violently. This is attefted by the officers, and a great number of people of reputation, whofe bufinefs called them to attend the docking the Gofport, and others who were on board the fhips in the bafon ; and what is very extraordinary, not one of those who were on the land could perceive himself affected by it, or that the earth under, or about them, did move.

The fame agitation was perceived in the ponds in Surry and Kent; in the fivers and on the fea fhores of Wale, Cornwall, Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire, and Scotland: At Kinfale in Ireland, the fea fwelled upon them and rolled in, in a furprising manner; and at Cork a very confiderable fhock of an earthquake was felt at the fame time, as alío in Irton parish, in Cumberland, and at Amfterdam, and many other parts of Holland. The Elbe, Wefer, and many rivers in Germany, were alfo extraordinarily agipared.

After advices informed us, that at the fame time, there was a violent earthquake at Madrid, which held fix or seven minutes, and obliged the royal family to leave the efcurial; feveral houfes fell, and fome perfons were killed thereby. At Oporto they had alfo feveral violent fhocks for near eight minutes, which did Tome mifchief. Cadiz and Seville were in like manner affected, at the former of which places the water rofe 22 feet perpendicular, overflowed the city, and de Aroyed many lives: But the most melancholy advices are from Lisbon, where the earth opened and fxa·lowed up great numbers of houfes, and the flames that iffued from the clefts, fet fire to those that food, fo that above two thirds of that opulent city were deftroyed, and 100,000 lives loft; but we mult wait for more exact and authentick accounts of this very fad calamity.

Edinburgh, Nov. 8. We hear from Fatkick, that on Wednefday laft the tide roft fo high in the river Carron, that it overflowed its banks, laid many acres of fine arable land under water, and breke down a very frong dam-head, which had never before been down, either wish any fwelling of the water or tide, in the memory of man. The damage done to the fields, and the navigation of the river, very great.

Dublin, Nov. 11. Laft Wednesday the ne canle of Sir John Bingham was burnt to the ground, and all the furniture,

pictures, plate, &c. to the amount of 50,000l. confumed by the flames. It was owing to fome burning coals falling on the floor of a room which was airing.

A lady in this kingdom hath made a curious piece of linen, equal to the finest callico, of the fkin of nettles: And, if trial were made, it is not doubted but coarfe linen or package might be made of briars, by tripping off the outside skin, and drying, beetling, and feutching the infide,

The affembly of Virginia having lately laid on a kind of poll-tax, a lift of thofe liable has been made out, by which it ap pears, that there are 40,443 whites, and 60,755 blacks, liable to this tax. No white women pay, and the men only from fixteen to fixty; but the black wo men all pay. The troops in the pay of that colony are ordered to be augmented to loco men, under the command of co lonel George Washington; the officers have received their beating instructions, and are immediately to fet out to raife their feveral companies.

There is advice from Hallifax, in NovaScotia, that captain Reufe, in a 20 gun fhip, had brought to St. John's three Fench veffels laden with fish, which he took on the coaft of Newfoundland; after which he returned to that ifland, landed his men, deftroyed the butts of the French hers on the coaft, drove the people up the country, and brought away two ship loads of cured th.
