CHAP. XLII. 1 The ofice of Christ. 5 God's promise to him. 10 An
exhortation to praise God. B Ehold my servant, whom I uphold ; mine elect, in whom
my soul delighteth ; I have put my spirit upon him : he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, vor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking fax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
4 He shall not fail, nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth : and the isles shall wait for his law.
5 I Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein :
6 I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles ;
7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prisonhouse.
8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare : before they spring forth I tell you of them.
10 Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. 11 Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift
their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit : let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the tops of the mountains.
12 Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.
13 The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar ; he shall prevail against his enemies.
14 I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy, and devour at once.
15 I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.
16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.
17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.
18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.
19 Who is blind, but my servant ? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD's servant?
20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.
21 The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison-houses ; they are for a prey, and none delivereth ; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.
23 Who among you will give ear to this ? who will hearken, and hear for the time to come?
24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers ? did not the Lord, he against whom we have sinned for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.
25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire
round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
CHAP. XLIV. 1 God's church comforted. 7 The vanity of idols, 9 and
folly of idol-makers. YET now hear, O Jacob my servant ; and Israel, whom I
have chosen : 2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee ; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou Jesurum, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground : I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring :
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water-courses.
5 One shall say, I am the LORD's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and snrname himself by the name of Israel.
6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no god.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall, declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people ? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them sliew unto them.
8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid : have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a god beside me? yea, there is no god; I know not any.
9 [ They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses ; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image, that is profitable for nothing ?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed; and the workmén, they are of men ; let them all be gathered together, let м3
them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms : yea, he is hungry and his strength faileth ; he drinketh no water, and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line ; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.
14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest : he planteth au ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn : for he will take thereof, and warm himself, yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; be maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.
16 He þurneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof be eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied : yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.
18 They have not known, nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they camot see; and weir hearts, that they cannot understand.
19 And none considereth in h heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, Jhave burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have bakea bead upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it; and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination ? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? 20 He feedeth on ashes ; a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand ?
21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: 0 Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions and as a cloud, thy sins : return unto me; for I have ye deemed thee.
23 Sing, 0 ye heavens ; for the LORD hath done it shout, ye lower parts of the earth : break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein : for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.
94 Thus saith the LORD thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee froin the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; tltaf spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;
26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited ; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:
27 That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers :
28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shah perform all my pleasure : even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built ; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
CHAP. XLV. 1 God calleth Cyrus for his church's sake. 5 He chal
lengeth obedience. 20 He convinceth the idols of vanity. THUS saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose
right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him ; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two-leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
2 I will
