2 Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign, and reigned fixteen years in Jerufalem, and did not that which was right in the fight of the LORD his God, like David his father.

3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Ifrael, yea, and made his fonto pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD caft out from before the children of Ifrael.

4. And he facrificed and burnt incenfe in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

5 Then Rezin king of Syria, and Pekah fon of Remaliah king of Ifrael, came up to Jerufalem to war: and they befieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him.

6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elach, and dwelt there unto this day.

7 So Ahaz fent meffengers to Tiglath-pilefer king of Affyria, faying, I am thy fervant and thy fon: come up, and fave me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Ifrael, which rise up against me.

8 And Abaz took the filver and gold that was found in the houfe of the LORD, and in the treasures of the kings house, and fent it for a present to the king of Affyria.

9 And the king of Affyria hearkned unto him: for the king of Affyria went up againft Damafcus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and flew Rezin.

fpiracy in Hofhea: for he had fent mef-. fengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no prefent to the king of Affyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Affyria fhut him up, and bound him in prifon.

5 Then the king of Affyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and befieged it three years.

6 In the ninth year of Hofhea, the king of Affyria took Samaria, and carried Ifrael away into Affyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

7. For fo it was, that the children of Ifrael had finned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,

8 And walked in the ftatutes of the heathen, (whom the LORD caft out from before the children of Ifrael) and of the kings of Ifrael, which they had made.

9 And the children of Ifrael did fe cretly thofe things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, fre.n the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

10 And they fet them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:

11 And there they burnt incenfe in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things co provoke the LORD to anger.

12 For they ferved idols, whereof the LORD had faid unto them, Ye fhall not do this thing.

13 Yet the LORD teftified againft I{rael, and againft Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the feers, faying, Turn ea his wicked reign. 5 Samaria for ye from your evil ways, and keep my fins is captivated. 24 The ftrange commandments, and my ftatutes, accordons plagued with lions, make a mixing to all the law which I commanded of religions. your fathers, and which I fent to you by my fervants the prophets.

ed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.

16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worhipped all the hoft of heaven, and ferved Baal.

17 And they caufed their fons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and ufed divination and enchantments, and fold themselves to do evil in the fight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Ifrael, and removed them out of his fight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

19 Alfo Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the ftatutes of Ifrael which they made.

20 And the LORD rejected all the feed of Ifrael, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of fpoilers, until he had caft them out of his fight.

21 For he rent Ifrael from the house of David, and they made Jeroboam the fon of Nebat king, and Jeroboam drave Ifrael from following the LORD, and made them fin a great fin.

22 For the children of Ifrael walked in all the fins of Jeroboam which he did, they departed not from them:

23 Until the LORD removed Ifrael out of his fight, as he had faid by all his fervants the prophets. So was Ifrael carried away out of their own land to Affyria, unto this day.

27 Then the king of Affyria commanded, faying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence, and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.

28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria, came and dwelt in Beth-el, and taught them how they fhould fear the LORD.

29 Howbeit, every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houfes of the high places, which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.

30 And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Afhima,

31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech the gods of Sepharvaim.

32 So they feared the LORD, and made unto themfelves of the loweft of them priefts of the high places, which facrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

33 They feared the LORD and ferved their own gods, after the manner of the nations, whom they carried away from thence.

34 Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their ftatutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Ifrael;

35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, faying, Ye fhall not fear other gods, nor bow your felves to them, nor ferve them, nor facrifice to them:

24 And the king of Affyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avah, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in 36 But the LORD, who brought you the cities of Samaria, instead of the chil-up out of the land of Egypt, with great dren of Ifrael; and they poffeffed Sama- power, and a ftretched out arm, him ria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. fhall ye fear, and him fhall ye worship, and to him fhall ye do facrifice.

25 And fo it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD; therefore the LORD fent tions among them, which flew fome of rbem.

26 Wherefore they spake to the king

39 But the LORD your God ye fhall fear, and he fhall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.

40 Howbeit, they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. 41 So chefe nations feared the LORD, and ferved the graven images, both their children, and their childrens children: as did their fathers, fo do they unto this day.

1 Hezekiahs good reign. 4 He deftroyeth idolatry, and profpereth. 9 Samaria is carried captive for their fins.

Ow it came to pafs in the third year of Hofhea fon of Elah king of Ifrael, that Hezekiah the fon of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerufalem: his mothers name alfo was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.

3 And he did that which was right in the fight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.

4. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brafen ferpent that Mofes had made: for unto thofe days the children ofIfrael did burn incenfe to it: & he called it Nehushtan. 5 He trufted in the LORD God of If rael, fo that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Mofes.

7 And the LORD was with him, and he profpered whitherfoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Affyria, and ferved him not.

8 He fmote the Philiftines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city,

And it came to pafs in the fourth year of king Hezekiah (which was the feventh year of Hofhea fon of Elah king of Ifrael) that Shalmanefer king of Af Syria, came up against Samaria, and befieged it.

10 And at the end of three years they took it, even in the fixth year of Hezekiah (that is the ninth year of Hofhea king of Ifrael) Samaria was taken.

Rab-fbakehs proud meffage.

11 And the king of Affyria did carry away Ifrael unto Affyria, and put them in Halah, and in Habor, by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:

12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but tranfgreffed his covenant and all that Mofes the fervant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, did Sennacherib king of Affyria come up againft all the fenced citics of Judah, and took them.

14 And Hezekiah king of Judah fent to the king of Affyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended, return from me that which thou putteft on me, I will bear. And the king of Affyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah, three hundred talents of filver, and thirty talents of gold.

15 And Hezekiah gave him all the filver that was found in the houfe of the LORD, and in the treasures of the kings houfe.

16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Affyria.

17 And the king of Affyria fent Tartan, and Rabfaris, and Rab-thakeh from Lachifh, to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerufalem: and they went up and came to Jerufalem : & when they were come up, they came and ftood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the high-way of the fullers field.

18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the fon of Hilkiah, which was over the houfhold, and Shebna the fcribe, and Joah the fon of Afaph the recorder.

19 And Rab-hakeh faid unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus faith the great king, the king of Affyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trufteft?

20 Thou fayft (but they are but vain words) I have counfel and ftrength for the war: now on whom doft thou truft, that thou rebelleft against me?

21 Now behold, thou trufteft upon the ftaff of this bruifed reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: fo is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

22 But if ye fay unto me, We truft in the LORD our God: not that he whose high places, and whofe altars Hezekials

24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the leaft of my mafters fervants, and put thy truft on Egypt for chariots and for horfemen?

25 Am I now come up without the LORD againft this place to deftroy it? The LORD faid to me, Go up againft this land, and deftroy it.

the LORD fhould deliver Jerufalem out of mine hand?

36 But the people held their peace, and anfwered him not a word: for the kings commandment was, faying, Anfwer him not.

26 Then faid Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabfhakeḥ, Speak, I pray thee, to thy fer-1 vants in the Sytian language, (for we underftand it) and talk not with us in the Jews language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

27 But Rab-fhakch faid unto them,

Hath my mafter fent me to thy mafter, and to thee, to fpeak thefe words? hath he not fent me to the men which fit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, & drink their own pifs with you? 28 Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews language, and fpake, faying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Affyria.

29 Thus faith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you, for he fhall not be able to deliver you out of his hand :

30 Neither let Hezekiah_make you truft in the LORD, faying, The LORD will furely deliver us, and this city fhall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Affyria.

31 Hearken not unto Hezekiah: for thus faith the king of Affyria, Make an agreement with me by a prefent, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his ciftern:

32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oyl-olive, and of honey, that ye may live and not die and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he perfwadeth you, faying, The LORD will deliver us.
