I.

WHEN God created man, saying, "Let us make man to our image and likeness" (Gen. i. 26), He created society. In Adam's creation Eve's was included, and in them and their creation, the human race, the last man as much as the first, however long the line between them. As Eve was made to spring from Adam, so the family was made to spring from Adam and Eve. Man, the family, society, each of these three is therefore equally the work of God, the second and third as much as the first. Each of them is, by the same creative word and act, "made to the image and likeness of God" as much as if He had said: "Let us make the family-let us make society, to our image and likeness."

Spoken in the name of the Eternal Trinity, the words, it will be seen, are not in the singular but in the plural number. It is not said, "Let me," but "Let us," nor is it "my image and likeness," but "our
