PREFACE.

THIS work was commenced with the purpose only to impart to Law Students some hints on the Art of Speaking, which had been suggested to the writer by experience and observation. It was expanded into its present form when, having been commenced, the writer was impressed with the conviction that to speak well it is necessary to be able to write well and read well. Hence the addition of these subjects to the original design. The writer trusts that they will not be found uninteresting or uninstructive.
