Meanwhile Sebastian, the king's brother, and Antonio, the usurper, supposing Ferdinand drowned, plot to kill King Alonso, and so be ready to seize Naples for Sebastian when a chance should come for returning to Italy. Ariel, by Prospero's command, interferes to save the king, and, after several exhibitions of magic power, brings the whole party spellbound to the magician's dwelling-place.

An underplot is carried forward by the clowns of the play, Caliban, the monster, Trinculo, the king's jester, and Stephano, his butler. These three plan to murder Prospero and take possession of his daughter and the island, but are defeated, tormented, and rendered ridiculous by Prospero and Ariel.
