Rose solemnly, and breathed the prayer of faith; And the gray saint, just on the wing for heaven

And the fair maid—and the bright-hair'd young man—

And child of curling locks, just taught to close The lash of its blue eye the while,—all knelt In attitude of prayer;-and then the hymn, Sincere in its low melody, went up

To worship God.

The white-hair'd pastor rose And look'd upon his flock-and with an eye That told his interest, and voice that spoke In tremulous accents eloquence like Paul's, He lent Isaiah's fire to the truths

Of revelation, and persuasion came

Like gushing waters from his lips, till hearts Unused to bend were soften'd, and the eye Unwont to weep sent forth the willing tear.

I went my way, but as I went I felt How well it was that the world-weary soul Should have its times to set its burthen down. N. P. WILLIS.

"The volume is full of attraction, and the heart of a child cannot but be affected with the touching appeals and simple illustrations by which important truth is enforced."-British Mother's Journal.

"This second series will be found every way worthy of the first. In truth, it is more matured, racy, tender, and touching, as might well be supposed from the years and experience of the gifted author. We do hope that Dr. Todd will not stay his hand here."-Brit. Standard. "We gladly welcome this new series, which we think quite equal to the former volume."-Baptist Magazine.

CLARA WOODWARD

AND HER DAY-DREAMS.

Uniform with "Nellie Grey." 18mo, with Illustrations, 1s. 6d. extra cloth gilt.

"An interesting and instructive tale, admirably adapted to stimulate to thought and action. The benefit of early culture, the temptations to which, when away from the countervailing influence of home, and thrown into mixed society, young ladies are exposed, the folly and sin into which they are often led, and the necessity of watchfulness on the part of parents to guard against the seductions of a gay life,-are all pourtrayed in colours as truthful as they are striking. The story is full of interest and full of warning."-Scottish Press.

"The food our spirits want,

Thy hand alone can give;

Oh! hear the prayer of faith, and grant
That we may eat and live."

[ocr errors]

While the elder members of the family have their "Golden Treasury," and "Daily Portion," it seems fit that a table should be spread for the little ones, that the crumbs' of truth and 'pure milk of the word' may minister to their growth in grace. "An elegant Gift-Book for Children. The idea is a happy one, and happily carried out. There is a verse from the Bible, followed by a verse of a hymn in the nature of a comment, provided for every day in the year; and both the verse and the metrical comment are admirably suited to children's capacities. We do not know that a mother could make her child a more valuable present than this elegant little volume, with instructions to commit to memory the daily lesson here provided."
