CV. The misery of being governed by weak or wicked rulers.

Ps. xii. 8. The wicked walk on every side when the vilest men are exalted. Eccl. x. 5, 6.

xciv. 20. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law.

Prov. xxviii. 15. As a roaring lion, and a raging bear, so is a wicked ruler over poor people.

CIX. Particular instances of God's providence in exalting or debas▾ ing rulers.

Acts xiii. 20. God gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. Ver. 21. Afterward he gave them Saul.

Ver. 22. When he had removed him, he raised up unto them David. 1 Sam. xx. 30. Ps. lxxviii. 70.-lxxxix. 19.

1 Chron. xxix. 1. Solomon whom alone thou hast chosen. Isa. xix. 18. The princes of Zoan are become fools. ver. 14. The Lord hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst of Egypt.

CX. Duties toward governors, praying for them. Ps. lxxii. 15. Prayer shall be made for him continually.

1 Tim. ji. 1. I exhort, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.

Tim. ii. 2. For kings, and for all that are in authority, &c. Ver. 3. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God.

CXI. Honour and respect to be shewn to their persons in words and

actions.

Exod. xxii. 28. Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ru ler of thy people. Acts xxiii. 5.

1 Sam. xxvi. 9. David said, destroy not Saul, the Lord's anointed. Ver. 11. Ch. xiv. 6, 7, 8.

Prov. xx. 2. The fear of a king, is as the roaring of a lion.

CXII. Obedience to magistrates. Eccl. viii. 2. Keep the kings com. mandment, and that in regard of the oath of God. See. Ezek. xvii. 12 to 20.

Ver. 5. He who keepeth the commandments, shall feel no evil thing.

Matt. xvii. 26. Jesus said, then are the children free.

Ver. 27. Notwithstanding lest we offend, give that piece of mo ney for me and thee.

xxii. 21. Render unto Cesar the things which are Cesar's. Rom. xiii. 1. Let every soul be subject to the higher powers. Ver. 5. Be subject not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. Ver. 7. Render to all their dues, tribute to whom tribute is due, &c. Tit. iii. 1. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates.

CXIII. Rebellion against, magistrates in lawful authority, the sin and punishment thereof.

Deut xvii. 12. The man that will not hearken unto the priest, or unto the jndge shall die.

Jos. i. 18. Whosoever will not hearken unto thy words, he shall be put to death.

Judges ii. 17. They would not hearken to their judges.

Ezra vii. 26. Whosoever will not do the law of God and of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death or to banishment, or to confiscations of goods, or to imprisonment. Ch. x. 6, 7, 8,

Rom. xiii. 2. Whosoever resisteth, resisteth the ordinance of God, and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

MINISTERS OF CHRIST.

CXV. Ministers of Christ, their duties. The commission given to the apostles.

Matt. v. 1. Jesus's disciples came unto him.

Ver. 18. He said, ye are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Ver. 14.

ix. 38. Pray the Lord of the harvest that he will send forth labourers. x. 5. These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them saying, Ver. 7. Go preach,

Ver. 8. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils.

Ver. 14. Whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
