this Mind be in you, which was also in Chrift Fefus, who being in the Form God, in agragμov sa, did not arrogate to himself to be equal with God; that is, he made no Oftentation of his Divinity: For this I take to be the true Meaning of that Phrafe, both because it is fo ufed by Plu tarch, and because it makes the Senfe much more eafie and current; thus: Who being in the Form of God, did not affume an equality with God; that is, he did not appear in the Glory of his Divinity, which was hid under a Vail of humane Flefh and Infirmity; But he emptied himself, and reck upon him the Form of a Servant, and was made in the Likeness of Men, and being found in Fashion as a Man, or in Habit of a Man, he became obedient unto Death, &c. So that if his being made in the Likeness and Fashion of a Mat, does fignifie that he was really Man by his Incarnation, then furely his being in the Form of God, when he took upon him the Fashion and Likeness of Man, and the Form of a Servant, or Slave, muft in all Reafon fignifie that he was really God before he became Man: For which Reafon the fame Apoftle did not doubt to lay, That God was manifested in the Feb, 1 Tim. 3.16. (1) That Almighty God, on fome particular Perfons, and in fome extraordinary Cafes, works irrefiftably, is not to be doubted; of this, the Converfion of St. Paul feems an Example. But this does not prove that this is God's general and ordinary Method of Proceeding with Men. God's general Method in the Salvation of particular Perfons, feems to be, to afford them fufficient Grace and Affiftance, which if they are not wanting to themselves will be effectual for their Converfion and Salvation. To them who improve the Grace he gives, he will give more. So that if any mifs of Heaven and Happiness, it is not becaufe God denies them his Grace, but becaufe they themselves do not use their own fincere and hearty Endeavours for obtaining thereof. From what the Apoftle here delivers, it is manifeft, That God ftirs up in us good Inclinations and Defires, and that he carries them on to effect, if we our felves do not oppofe and hinder him. He works in us both to will and to do. And this the Apoftle makes an Argument to encourage us to be diligent and induftrious, becaufe God is ready to afflift us. It is true, that in the holy
