flock; being more tender in spirit, and concerned for the advancement of truth and righteousness in the earth. May they be encouraged to press forward notwithstanding the stumbling blocks that are among some of their elder brethren and sisters.
On the 30th of the 6th month, 1798, I returned in safety to my own habitation, though feeling much in the situation of an empty vessel; yet in sincerity, and with a feeling heart, I can say, Great and marvellous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty; just and true have been, and are all thy ways towards me. And now, while I am writing, I feel all within me bow in reverence to thy great name, for thou art worthy of humble adoration, high praises and renown, now, henceforth and forever, saith my soul.
On thus getting home, Joshua Evans appeared unusually cheerful, saying, he felt easy in mind, and clear of America. He lived but six days afterward. On the 7th of 7th month, he rose early in the morning, as was his usual practice, and went into a field near his house to hoe among some hills of sweet potatoes. About sunrise he was observed to lean on his hoe-handle, which is supposed to be the time he began to feel unwell: he soon after hastened to the house, and laying down on the bed by his wife (who had not yet risen) he told her he felt a pain in his breast. Immediately after, his wife hearing him make an unusual noise, rose, and perceived his breath was gone. He was buried next day at Haddonfield, after which a large and solemn meeting was held.
