THE RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS. By the Rev. W. W. PYм. 12mo. London: Nisbets. 1843.

ALL that Mr. Pym has written on prophecy is worthy of attention and calculated to awaken the Christian's mind to the remarkable signs of the times of these eventful days. The plan of the present book is very useful; it is founded on the words of St. Peter in his address to the Jews respecting the restitution of all things, of which God had spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began, Acts iii. 19-21. On this ground Mr. Pym goes through the chief prophecies of Scripture, which relate to the renewal and restoration of our world in regular order, as given in the word of God, both in the Old and New Testament from Genesis to Revelation. The plan facilitates reference, and has the great advantage of interpretation of Scripture in the order in which it was given us. But it would add to the usefulness of the work to give, at the close, a summary of the events which he believes will yet take place in the order of time in which he thinks that they will occur.

COMMENTS ON THE EPISTLES, as appointed to be read at the Communion Table. By the Rev. J. F. HONE. 12mo. London: Parker. 1842.

THERE is much that is practical, holy, and useful in this work, and an occasional just exhibition of the freedom and fulness of divine grace. There are expressions with which we could not concur. The foundation of the authority of ministers is put far too exclusively on their ordination. In commenting on 1 Cor. iv. 1-5, it is said, "They derive their commission through the bishops that ordained, through the bishops of preceding ages, and finally through the Apostles from Christ himself." But the purity of the doctrine is a great part of the faithfulness of the stewards of the mysteries of God. A minister dispensing error is no faithful steward of those mysteries. Faithful ministers are not merely known by the outward call, but also by the pure preaching of the word of God. Mr. Hone shows justly the responsibility of the ministry. But the overruling of the outward call to the ministry, and the neglect of the inward call of the Holy Ghost, on which our Church is so explicit, is just calculated to injure our Church, not only in our own country, but in the foreign churches of Christ. A fuller working in of evangelical motives would much improve these com

ments.
