Through soft green trees, with fabled fruits of gold
View that bright land, Hesperides of old ; '

There, Fancy first ascended her bright throne,
Stern Truth then fled, and all remained her own;
There shrined in tints most exquisitely wrought*
The Poet wandered through the realms of thought,
Till he the heavenly inspiration caught;
Then soar'd away to Helicon's pure fount,
Which purified him for the "sacred mount.'
Barbary States !-there smiling nature plays
In silver sunshine o'er thy thousand bays;
Eden of Afric-ancient classic land,

How sunk, how fallen! 'Twas thy own bloody hand
That lighted first destruction's burning brand.
Now desolation sweeps thy crimson waves-
Thy chiefs were pirates, and thy people slaves.
Bright Freedom shrieked and fled thy hated shore
When Carthage fell and Hannib'l lived no more!
I pity those who pass their lives away

'Midst cities' din, who never saw the day
Break fresh and glorious over dewy flowers,
Nor evening stealing through her saffron bowers,
Nor moonlight sleeping on the silent glen,
Far, far away from tumult, noise, and men,
Who only know them through the poet's page,
Or scenic paintings of a narrow stage.

"Magna opera Domini: exquisitata in omnes voluntates ejus."-PSALM CX.

FAR o'er Atlantic's broad and deep blue wave,
Land of the stranger, of the free, the brave—
Land of the Exiles' of the Patriots' grave,

Who fled the country that they could not save-
What, though no classic lore to thee belong
No ancient bards have poured their souls in song,
No mad ambition driven his sanguined car
Through thy broad plains, and wak'd the voice of war;
Though no rude temples of the pagan time
Hath found a place in thy too modern clime;
No ancient cities of a former age

Which live but now in the historic page:
All these are grand-but grandeur in decay
Speaks of what was, but now has passed away,
The light and glory of another day!

Thou hast the present! and its likeness there
In vain we seek for in the world elsewhere!
Fair, free Columbia, young world of the west,
Where sublime Nature sets her beauteous crest,
Where evening sunshine softly steals away
In "farewell smiles" o'er many an ocean bay ;
Where lofty mountain's ring eternal peals
Of solemn thunder through her misty veils ;
Where dark, deep woods in solemn silence wave

Their verdant bough above some nameless grave,'

And beauteous birds flit here and there along
Through flowery bow with varied tones of song.
There rapid torrents dash their boiling brine
Down rugged rocks tremendous and sublime,
And circling wreaths ascend of rainbow spray 8
As if young Nature kept a "Holiday!"

Lov'd land of wonders, thou art vast, immense,
The throne and temple of Omnipotence-
There let the Atheist wander and adore
The living God from thence for evermore.
For as we bend to worship at thy shrine,
Earth is forgot, the soul is all divine;
Eternal objects ever after fling

Their dreamy shapes o'er our imagining!
O'er the pale regions of the artic pole,
Where desolation waves her sable stole,

Where ocean monsters toss in foam the waves
And savage beasts prowl round thy sea-beat caves
And tempests chant the solemn funeral dirge
Of prostrate nature to the lonely surge,

Yet only there bright shapes of billowy light Comes trembling through the inky dome of night, 9

'Tis only there heaven's starry banner breaks
Through misty clouds o'er all thy icy peaks;
The land of lakes, half shining through her tears,
Like some spoiled child of beauty, next appears:
There forest bloom primeval where the stroke ;
Of woodsman's axe their silence never broke,

10

Nor human footsteps ever yet profaned

Thy blooming vales where only nature reigned,
Hail ye fair States! where Plenty strews her horn,
Both Art and Nature thy broad plains adorn,
Here sparkling cascades, there the cedar-tree,
Yonder vast vales of wealth and luxury,

And o'er thy pearl-waves Commerce with a smile.
Invites each sail from every distant isle,
Where azure clouds hang o'er the glassy bay,
And every year is one long summer day,
There lies New Spain, adorned with every tree—
The sandal, rosewood, and mahogany.

Rich Quito sparkles with her silver caves,
Her golden mines and scarce less golden waves,
Eternal spring once bloomed among thy hills
From whose rough sides leaped many lovely rills,
Till earthquakes woke, and with despoiler's hand
Thick strewed destruction o'er the pleasant land. "
Peru and Chili next uprear their forms

Huge, vast, immense above the thunder storms,
And from their bright and dazzling domes of

snow

Look down on warring elements below;
Mock suns ascend, and halos float in air,
As if the mountain spirit was at prayer!
The lava streams! huge Cotopaxi sounds
Volcanic thunders through the vast profounds.
Buenos Ayres, where the Candar soars,

In pride and beauty, o'er thy rocky shores,

And bright Potosi, with its thousand mines.
Of gold and silver through bright foliage shines
Brazilian states, like some enchanted land

Of eastern tales, their sparkling gems expand ;
And De La Plata ripples over caves

Of spray crystal ere it meets the waves;
Next Amazonia, far as eye can see,
Extends one lone, immense eternity,

So silent, shadowy, and still, 'twould seem 13
As if creation lived but in a dream.
Bleak Patagonia's sterile rugged rocks

Are full of grandeur, through no brilliant flocks
From flowery vales pour forth the choral song
From morning's dawn throughout the whole day long.
Though spring scarce smiles upon that lonely clime,
Yet thy dark mountains rise bleak, wild, sublime,
Whose stormy caverns peal the thunder's chime,
And giant savages stalk o'er the land,

Like the creations of a wizard's wand, 14

The broad Pacific, lit with many an isle,
Where 66
summer years and summer women" smile,
And dance beneath the Palm-grove's sacred shade
Young warrior chiefs, each with his favourite maid.
See western Indies fling their fragrant breeze
Far o'er the coral groves of Carribees,
And moonlight's magic melt along the strand
Like paths of bliss that lead to fairy-land !
These are thy works, O Nature! Let me be
Shrined in thy tints of light and harmony,
Till my wrapped soul forget mortality!
