spiritual independence of the state; even down to the present day, this is the peculiar characteristic of Scottish history. Whereas in England, the church has no history of its own, properly speaking; the national church has not had in England an existence independent of the state. In England, however, the nation's political freedom has been achieved; and both spiritual life and social enjoyment are needful to complete the happiness of a perfect man, or a perfect nation.

Ver. 47. "So he measured the court, an hundred cubits long, and an hundred cubits broad, four-square; and the altar that was before the house." The measurement of this court commences with the year 1588-9, when England was threatened with a Spanish invasion, and when God caused the overthrow of the enemy's purpose. The length is one hundred cubits, or one hundred years, terminating in the year 1688-9, when Britain was threatened with a return of the papal supremacy, through a popish monarch-from which also God delivered the nation. The measurement of the breadth commences with the year 1688-9, and is also one hundred cubits, or one hundred years, terminating in the year 1788-9, when the French revolution broke out, which also threatened disaster to Britain-but God preserved her once more. The measurements of the altar are given in a subsequent chapter.

Ver. 48, 49. "And he brought me to the porch of the house, and measured each post of the porch, five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that side: and the breadth of the gate was three cubits on this side, and three cubits on that side. The length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits; and he brought me by the steps whereby they went up to it: and there

were pillars by the posts, one on this side, and another on that side." The post of the porch, five cubits on this side, is the year 1843, in which the roll of the curse began to unfold in Scotland; the five cubits on that side is the year 1853, in which the curse shall overtake the Turkish empire; the year 1848 being ever memorable, and the middle watch between them. The breadth of the gate commences with the formation of the Evangelical Alliance in 1845, which being three cubits, or three years on this side, terminates in the year 1848; and the three cubits, or three years on that side, terminate in the year 1851, when in Britain the restoration of all things shall begin. The length of the porch is from the year 1829, in which Roman catholic emancipation was granted in Britain, until the year 1849, when Britain assisted the Turkish government in its resistance of Russia and Austria, when required to give up the Hungarian refugees-the measurement being twenty cubits, or twenty years. In both these instances, Britain exemplified the noble principle of doing justly, and loving mercy, although she knew the systems were both founded upon wickedness, and were doomed to destruction. In eleven years more, the year 1860, she will hold forth a still more decided national testimony against all wickedness; and this is the breadth of the porch, which is eleven cubits, or eleven years. The steps whereby her people have ascended to this lofty mountain of greatness and glory, are eight in number, these are faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity. There were pillars by the posts, supports of truth, testimonies for God. In 1843, a noble testimony was borne by willing and obedient men, who gave up all for the sake of conscience;

and in 1853, the judgments of God long threatened, then to be executed against a system of wickedness which has tyrannized over men, and destroyed their happiness, will reveal God as faithful and true.

CHAPTER XXVI.

EZEK. chap. xli. ver. 1, 2. "Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle. And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side; and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits." The tabernacle commences in the year 1848; the breadth on the one side is six cubits, or six years, from 1848, until 1854, when a testimony shall be lifted up for the truth in the east by Britain, and the way of the kings of the east begin to be prepared. The breadth on the other side is also six cubits, or six years, from 1854 until 1860, in which year Britain shall be in such a state as to present to the world a living testimony against wickedness. The whole breadth of the tabernacle is twelve years, from 1848 until 1860. The breadth of the door is from 1843 until 1853, ten cubits, or ten years. This has a middle watch, the year 1848, the breadth of the door being five cubits, or five years, on the one side, and five cubits, 'or five years, on the other side. The length thereof is from 1843 until 1883, forty cubits, or forty years; and the breadth is from 1883 until 1903, twenty cubits, or

twenty years, when Judah, Jerusalem, and Israel shall be united in one.

Ver. 3-5. "Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits;" this is from the year 1843, when the Scotch disruption took place, until the year 1845, when the Evangelical Alliance was formed-the measurement being two cubits, or two years. "And the door six cubits;" from the formation of the Evangelical Alliance, in 1845, until Britain fully commences her work of restoration in 1851, is the door, being six cubits, or six years. "And the breadth of the door seven cubits;" from God's manifestation of Himself in 1843, until He appears in His glory to build up Zion in the year 1850, during which the jubilee trumpet will be sounded, when God will speak, yea, roar out of Zion, is seven cubits, or seven years, this being the breadth of the door. "So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits;" that is, from the year 1843, when the earthquake began, until the year 1863, when Great Britain shall be a perfect national man, the number of whose name is six hundred threescore and six. This is the length, twenty cubits, or twenty years. "And the breadth twenty cubits;" this is from 1863, until 1883, when the European nations-spiritual Jerusalem shall have commenced their burning in the fire, and the world shall have entered upon the last forty years of Satan's usurped reign over any part of it. This measurement is before the erection of the temple, in the union of Jews and Gentiles; but it is the most holy place, for God will have descended, and will be dwelling with men in Great Britain and France. "After he measured the wall of the house six cubits;" this is from 1843, until 1849, being six cubits, or six
