THE Discourses of which this volume is composed are accompanied, now on their publication, with a variety of notes, some necessarily in the ancient and modern foreign languages. These, it was hoped, would serve to confirm the opinions or elucidate the arguments of the text, when considered, if indeed the work be found of that importance, in the closet. But notes are of course not necessary for the ready comprehension of that which was delivered from the pulpit, and the

whole, it is presumed, may be well understood without them.

To you then these Discourses, heard with favour and attention in your Parish Church, are now dedicated in print, with sentiments of affectionate regard, by your
