fince been graciously pleafed to extend the royal bounty in their favour, by a grant of 25,000l. to defray their charges in removing, and a farther fum of 25,000/. in aid of their establishment. The Earl of Ely has offered them a fet-, tlement in Wexford county; and the Duke of Leinster has made the fame offer in the county of Kildare.

Accounts from Madras 11th. were this day received at St. James's, by which his Majefty received the agreeable news of the fafe arrival of the Sultan and Magnanime, with their convoy, on March 31; and that the French fleet had left the Coromandel coast.

Was exposed to public view, the cenotaph erected in Guildhall, to the memory of the late Earl of Chatham.-Elevated on a bafe fixed to a rock, the Earl of Chatham, in the habit of a Roman fenator, appears gracefully looking on a figure reprefenting the city of London; his left hand, directs the helm of government, whilft his right embraces Commerce, who, charged with her proper attributes, is moft delightfully fmiling on her kind protector, through whofe zeal, affifted by the four quarters of the world, the is pouring plenty into the lap of Britannia.

The city in her mural crown, with a look of gratitude, is addreffing her noble friend, pointing the while to Commerce; at her feet are placed the emblems of Induftry, and on her right hand those of Juftice and Power. Upon the plinth is engraved the following infcription:

"In grateful acknowledgment to the fupreme Difpofer of events, who, intending to advance this nation for fuch time as to his wifdom feemed good, to a high pitch of profperity and glory, by unanimity at home-by confidence and reputation abroad by alliance wifely chofen and faithfully observed-by colonies united and protected-by decifive victories by fea and land-by conqueft made by arms, and generofity in every part of the globe--and by commerce, for the first time united with and made to flourish by war-was pleafed to raise up, as a proper inftrument in this memorable work,

Old wheat was this day fold in Derby market at 8s. 9d. a bufhel, and malt at 7s.

Adm. Pigot with twenty-two fail of the line, arrived at New York from the West Indies on the 5th of September.

The Grand Duke and Duchefs of Ruffia arrived at Berne in Switzerland on the 7th ult. as did likewife their Royal Highneffes the Duke and Duchefs of Gloucefter, with their fuite. Thefe royal travellers went together to view the ice mountains, the moft remarkable natural curiofities in that part of Europe.

Began the feffions at the 16th. 28th. Old Bailey, when Thomas Edwards was tried for tealing a guinea, the property of Chambers, Langfton, and Hall, to whom he was clerk. He became fufpected, and Mr. Hall marked fome guineas in the prefence of a confidential fervant, and put them into a desk to which the prifoner had accefs; one of which was found upon the prifoner. In alleviation, he pleaded the first offence, and called a multitude of gentlemen to his character; on whofe recommendation he was permitted to enter into the fervice of the Eaft India Company in the military line. 19th.

Dr. Richard Watfon was confecrated in Bow church Bishop of Landaff, in the room of Dr. Barrington, promoted to Salisbury.

The fame day the feffions at the Old Bailey, which began on Wednesday, ended, when nine convicts received fentence of death.

Adm. Office. Rear-ad22d. miral Digby defires to acquaint their lordships that Captain Purvis, of the floop Duc de Chartres, of 16 guns and 125 men, had captured and brought into New York, the Argle of 22 guns and 136 men, after a fharp action of an hour; in which time he had her firft captain with twelve men killed, and her two next officers with thirteen men wounded. The Duc de Chartres did not lose a man. The Argle had difpatches for the French fleet.

His Imperial Majefty of Germany has limited the universities throughout his kingdoms to feven; at Vienna, at Prague, at Peft, at Lemberg, at Pavia, at Louvain, and at Loyburgh. The eftablishment of the latter is on the fame footing with that of Gottingen, where every one is at liberty to think with freedom, and to publifh his thoughts to all the world.

DIED at Preften, near Hull, Val. Cateby, who attained to the great age of 116; and had his intellects perfect till within two days of his diffolution. His diet for the laft twenty years, was milk and bifcuit. He went to fea in his eighteenth year, and continued a failor thirty-fix years; he then turned farmer, which occupation he followed thirty-fix years,

Yesterday a common hall was held at Guildhall for the election of a lord mayor for the year enfuing; when the recorder informed the livery, that they were called together for the very important bufinefs of electing a chief magiftrate in the room of a worthy alderman who was difcharged that office on account of his bad ftate of health.

The names of the aldermen who had ferved the office of theriff were feverally put up, when the fheriffs declared the fhew of hands to be in favour of the Aldermen Newnham and Clark, and reported the fame to the court of aldermen, then fitting in the council-chamber, who foon after returned into the hall, when the recorder declared the election to have fallen on Nathaniel Newnham, Efq. Yesterday a court of proprietors was held at the India Houfe, from noon till fix in the evening, for the purpose of ballotting on the question to refcind the vote of the court of directors for removing Warren Hattings, Efq. from the government of Bengal, &c.

The first general meeting

of the patrons of the charityfchools throughout Great Britain was held at St. Paul's Coffeehoufe in St. Paul's Church-yard, when the Right Hon. Thomas Harley was chofen prefident; the Right Hon. Lord Bagot and Sir Watkyn Williams Wynne, viceprefidents; William Wright, Efq. of Soho-fquare, treasurer; Mr. John Robinson, of Bartlett's Buildings, fecretary; and Meffrs. Boldero, Barnfton, and Co. bankers' to the fociety.

11th.

This day a court of general officers met at the Horfe-Guards, in obedience to a warrant from his Majefty, to try the Hon. Lieut. General Murray, late governor of Minorca, on feveral charges exhibited against him by Lieut. General Sir William Draper, Kt. of the Bath, late deputy-governor, or second in command of the fame island.

Arrived at Plymouth, 13th. being part of Lord Howe's fquadron, the Egmont 74, Bienfaifant 64, and the Buffalo of 60. The accounts brought by these fhips are, that Lord Howe has detached for the Weft Indies, having first victualled and watered them completely from the fleet, the following men of war:

The Sampfon, Crown, and Vigilant, of 64 guns, and the Minerva and Andromache, were left cruifing off Lisbon; and the Ocean of 90, Admiral Milbank, with the Foudroyant, 80; Fortitude, 74; Dublin, 74; Afia, 64; and Panther, 60, were gone to Ireland to victual and water. They are fince arrived at St. Helens.

Letters just received from 14th. Newfoundland, give a very melancholy relation of the lofs of the Hector man of war off that inland. She had juft had an engagement with two French frigates, whom the beat off; but a ftorm coming on foon after the action, fhe became fo leaky that it was impoffible to keep her above water. Just as the crew were about to leave her and commit themfelves to the mercy of the waves in their boats, a brig came in fight, and landed as many of them as were able to come on board upon the abovementioned ifland, but in a miferable condition. Among them was Captain Bourchier, who is fince arrived in Ireland, being feverely wounded in the engagement; and it was with difficulty that the officer pre vented her falling into the hands of the enemy. Capt. Drury, who was paffenger on board, is now in town, and confirms the melancholy fituation of that part of the crew who were faved (about 200 in number); the reft went to the bottom with the ship.

Lord Howe, with part of .15th. the fleet under his command, arrived at St. Helen's, viz. The Victory, Britannia, Atlas, Queen, Princefs Royal, Blenheim, Cambridge, Royal William, Alexander, Courageux, Edgar, Gan

ges, Goliah, Vengeance, Pegafe; and the Bombay, Monfieur, and Diana frigates.

The veffel with the div ing-bell came into Portfmouth harbour, having fifhed up 16 guns, with cordage, &c. be longing to the Royal George.

This day Capt. M'Bride was at the levee, and delivered to the King returns of the volunteer seamen raifed in Ireland for the royal navy.

25th.

Yesterday a court of proprietors was held at the Eaft India House, in Leadenhallftreet, pursuant to an advertisement from the court of directors, when the following motion was made :

"Refolved, That it appearing that there is fome defign to difpute the rights of the Eaft India Company; and it being found from the tenor of the letters that have paft between his Majefty's fecretary of ftate and the directors, that fomething inimical to the privileges of the court of proprietors is intended, a committee of nine proprietors be appointed to watch over the bufinefs of the Eaft India Company, as it may be agitated in parliament; and to take all fuch legal fteps as may appear neceffary to prevent thofe much feared innovations, fubject to the controul of general courts; and that the directors be instructed not to fend out to India the over-land exprefs that had been intended.”

After fome defultory converfation, the motion was reduced merely to the appointment of a committee of nine proprietors, to meet at an apartment in the house, any five to do business; and then, on a motion, the court adjourned.

Late

Late on Friday night the following letter was received at the manfion-house, from the Hon. Mr. Thomas Townfhend, one of his Majefty's principal fecretaries of State :

Whitehall, Nov. 22, 1782. To the Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor of the City of London. My Lord,

His Majefty's minifters, anxious to prevent as early as poffible the mifchiefs too commonly refulting from fpeculation in the funds during the uncertain state of negotiations of peace between the powers at war, which it is the general honour and intereft of all perfons to avoid, have thought it their duty to ask his Majefty's permiffion to communicate to you, that the negociations now carrying on at Paris, are brought fo near to a crifis as to promite a decifive conclufion either for peace or war before the meeting of parliament; which will on that account be prorogued from Tuesday the 26th inftant, to Thursday the 5th of December; and I have his Majefty's command to affure you, that you will receive immediate notice of the fame.
