*should rest from their labours; * for their works do follow them."

And I saw, and behold a white cloud, and upon the 14 cloud—I saw one sitting like unto the Son of Man,— having on his head a crown of gold, and in his hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, 15 crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "Thrust in thy sickle, and reap; because the time *to reap is come; because the harvest of the earth is ripened." And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his 16 sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

And another angel came out of the temple which is 17 in heaven, HE also having a sharp sickle. And another 18 angel came out from the altar, who hath authority over fire; and he cried with a loud voice to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, "Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripened." And the angel thrust in 19 his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the 20 city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

XV. AND I SAW another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; because in them was completed the wrath of God.

And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire, 2 and those that had gotten the victory from the beast, and from his image, and *from the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and marvellous are thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty: righteous and true are thy ways, thou King of the ** nations. Who shall not fear, *O Lord, and glorify thy name? because thou only art holy: because all the nations shall come and worship in thy presence; because thy judgments were manifested."

5 And after these things I saw, and the temple of the 6 tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: and the seven angels who had the seven plagues, came out of the temple, clothed in pure bright † stone, and 7 girded about their breasts with girdles of gold. And one of the four living creatures gave unto the seven angels seven bowls of gold, full of the wrath of God, who 8 liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no one was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

XVI. And I heard a great voice out of the temple, saying to the seven angels, "Go forth, and pour out the * seven bowls of the wrath of God into the earth." And the first departed, and poured out his bowl * into the earth; and there came a noisome and grievous sore upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image.

3 And the second poured out his bowl into the sea; and it became blood as of a dead man; and

"Pure bright stone," is the reading of the most ancient MSS., and some of the versions.. This, if it be the true reading, must be with Dan. x. 6. The reading "linen," is that of B, by but a single letter from that of A and C. [The is adopted by Dr. Tregelles in his last edition.]

Come as a thief; blessed is he that watcheth,

and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they 16 see his shame." And he gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew Armagedon." 17 And the seventh poured out his bowl *upon the air; and there came † a great voice out of the temple,* 18 from the throne, saying, "It is done.” And there were * lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since man was upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, so great. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and

the cities of the nations fell; and Babylon the great was remembered before God, to give unto her the cup of 20 the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every

island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And a great hail, as it were stones of a talent weight, falleth from heaven upon men: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; because the plague thereof is exceedingly great.

XVII. AND THERE CAME one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, and talked with me, saying, *"Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters: 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made 3 drunk with the wine of her fornication." And he carried me away into a wilderness in the spirit: and

Or, "they gathered them together."

b The older Greek copies can define nothing here, as they have no breathings: the better Editors, however, give 'Apμayedŵr, and the old Latin copies express the aspirate. It is strange that any should have doubted what is set forth by a plain Hebrew name of this place of assembling, 177, the mountain of Megiddo.

I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a cup of gold in her hand full of abominations-and the filthiness of her fornication, and upon her forehead a name written, a Mystery," BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and I wondered when I saw her, with great wonder.

6

And the angel said unto me, "Wherefore didst thou 7 wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and the ten horns.

:

*"The beast that thou sawest, was, and is not, and is to ascend out of the abyss, and to go into perdition and those who dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast, because he was, and is not, and * shall be present.

*

"Here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven 9 heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth ; and there are seven kings: the five are fallen, the 10 one is, the other is not yet come; and when he shall have come, he must continue a short space. And the 11 beast that was, and is not, even HE is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

"And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, 12 who received not yet a kingdom; but they receive authority as kings at one hour with the beast.
