Nature of acceptable prayer.

ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

7. With importunity and perseverance?

Gen. 32. 24. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him, until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh: and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh: And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

Is. 62. 6. Ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence, and give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

Lk. 11. 5. And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves: For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

Lk. 18. 1. Men ought always to pray, and not to faint. 5. Because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 7. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Rom. 12. 12. Continuing instant in prayer.

Gal. 6. 9. Let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.

8. In the name of Christ.

Jn. 14. 13. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I

will do it.

Jn. 16. 23. Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name he will give it you. Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Col. 3. 17. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

9. With godly sincerity.

Ps. 4. 3. But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.

Ps. 17. 1. Give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.

Ps. 66. 18. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.

Ps. 145. 18. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

Jer. 29. 13. Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. Dt. 4. 29.

Mat. 15. 8. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.

10. With alms-giving and liberality.

Pr. 21. 13. Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

521. Has God promised to hear and answer prayer?

Dt. 4. 29. But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek for him with all the heart, and with all the soul.

Ps. 37. 4. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thy heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Ps. 50. 15. Call upon me in the day of trouble: 1 will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Ps. 84. 11. The Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

Ps. 91. 15. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.

Ps. 102. 13. Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favor her, yea, the set time, is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favor the dust thereof. 16. When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory. He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

Ps. 145. 18. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all them that call upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

Pr. 10. 24. The desire of the righteous shall be granted.

Is. 30. 19. He will be very gracious unto thee, at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.

Promises to prayer.

Is. 45. 19. I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain.

Jer. 33. 3. Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou know

est not.

Joel 2. 32. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered.

Zec. 13. 9. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

Mat. 7. 7. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven. give good things to them that ask him? [Luke 11. 13 give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him.]

Mat. 18. 19. If two of you shall agree on earth, as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Jam. 4. 8. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you.

Jam. 5. 15. The prayer of faith shall save the sick.

Efficacy of prayer.

and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

1 Pet. 3. 12. The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers.

522. Has prayer prevailed with God?

Gen. 18. 32. O, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

Gen. 32. 28. As a prince hast thou power with God, and with men, and hast prevailed.

Ex. 32. 11. And Moses besought the Lord his God. 14. And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

Num. 11. 2. When Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched.

Num. 14. 19. Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. And the Lord said, I have pardoned accord

ing to thy word.

Dt. 9. 19. (For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you.) But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also. And the Lord was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.
