Chastisement-Result of parental duties.

468. Is the chastisement of disobedient children required?

Pr. 10. 13. A rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Pr. 13. 24. He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Pr. 19. 18. Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Pr. 22. 15. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Pr. 23. 13. Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Pr. 26. 3. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Pr. 29. 15. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself, bringeth his mother to shame. 17. Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest: yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

Heb. 12. 9. We have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence.

469. What is the result of parental faithfulness?

Gen. 17. 7. I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

Gen. 18. 19. I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him; and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

Ps. 37. 26. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

Ps. 102. 28.

Parental negligence.

The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

Ps. 103. 17. The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

Pr. 11.21. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

Pr. 20. 7. The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Pr. 22. 6. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

2 Tim. 1. 5. When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. [See 403 and 521–2.]

470. What is the result of parental neglect and unfaithfulness?

Ex. 20. 5. For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. Jer. 32.

Num. 14. 33. And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcasses be wasted in the wilderness.

A meek and quiet spirit.

God distributeth sorows in his anger.

up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

Hos. 4. 6. Seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. Mat. 23. 35, 36.

Peace.

471. Ought we to have a "meck and quiet spirit?"

Gal. 6. 1. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Ep. 4. 1. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Col. 3. 12. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long suffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another.

1 Tim. 6. 11. Follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

2 Tim. 2. 25. In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

Tit. 3. 1. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all

men.

Ps. 25. 9. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

Ps. 37. 11. The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Ps. 76. 9.

Patience in tribulation.

Ps. 147. 6. The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.

Ps. 149. 4. The Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

Zep. 2. 3. Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger.

Mat. 5. 5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

1 Pet. 3. 4. The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 15.

473. Ought we to be "patient in tribulation ?"

Ps. 37. 1. Fret not thyself because of evil doers: 7. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Lk. 21. 19. In your patience possess ye your souls. Rom. 2. 7. To them who by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, and honor, and immortality; eternal life.

Patient in tribulation; continuing in

Rom. 12. 12. stant in prayer. 1 Thes. 5. 14. Be patient towards all men. 2 Thes. 1. 4. We ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations, that ye endure.

Heb. 6. 12. Be not slothful; but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Heb. 12. 1. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

Jam. 1. 4. Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Jam. 5. 7. Be patient therefore brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth.

Litigation-Peace, mildness and gentleness.

for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience- -Be ye also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 10. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

1 Pet. 2. 20. If when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

2 Pet. 1. 5. Giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; And to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience.

474. What is said of litigation?

Mat. 5. 40. If any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

1 Cor. 6. 1. Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? 6. But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Pr. 19. 11.

475. Are peace, mildness, and gentleness expressly required, and exemplified?

Ps. 34. 14. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Jer. 29. 7. Seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Zec. 8. 19. Love the truth and peace.

Mat. 5. 9. Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called the children of God.
