Lk. 16. 18. Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery; and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband, committeth adultery.

Rom. 7. 2. The woman which hath a husband, is bound by the law of her husband so long as he liveth: but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then, if while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress.

1 Cor. 7. 10. Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

396. Is it right for a believer to marry an unbeliever? Gen. 6. 2. The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man.

Dt. 7. 3. Neither shalt thou make marriage with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away the son from following me, that they may serve other Gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

398. What mutual duties are requisite, to secure domestic order and happiness?

Ep. 5. 21. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love

Col. 3. 18. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Tit. 2. 4. Teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

1 Pet. 3. 1. Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 6. Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord.

399. Is polygamy forbidden?

Gen. 2. 24. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.

Dt. 17. 15. Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee whom the Lord thy God shall choose. 17. Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away.

1 K. 11. 1. But king Solomon loved many strange women. 3. And his wives turned away his heart.

Pr. 5. 18. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. Mal. 2. 15. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the Spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

Divinely appointed—What are they?

1 Tim. 3.2. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife.

Means of Grace.

400. Has God appointed means of grace?

Ec. 11. 6. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

Mat. 20. 1. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard.

Mk. 4. 14. The sower soweth the word.

Lk. 10. 2. The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.

Jn. 4. 35. Lift up your eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth, may rejoice together.

1 Cor. 3. 8. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labor. For we are laborers together with God.

401. What are the scriptural means of grace?

Ps. 19. 7. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.

Jn. 15. 3. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Jn. 17. 17. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Rom. 1. 16. I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Rom. 10. 17. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Possess pre-eminent moral power.

1 Cor. 1. 21. It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Jam. 1. 18. Of his own will begat he us, with the word of truth. 21. Receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

1 Pet. 1. 23. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God.

402. Do the scriptural means of grace possess pre-eminent moral power?

Ps. 138. 2. Thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Jer. 23. 28. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces!

Lk. 16. 31. If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Heb. 4. 12. The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
