PREFACE.

IT having been my lot in Providence, for many years past, to occupy one of the leading offices in a Society formed at this port for the Christian instruction of Seamen and Soldiers, I have, in common with all my respected coadjutors, and many other friends, always had to deplore the want of a well-compiled Hymn Book, adapted to our purpose, and free from the peculiarities of sect or party. It is true, there are extant, Collections of Hymns, designed for the exclusive use of pious Seamen, and two of these, by different Compilers, are now before me; but our Society, not being able to approve, has never seen fit to adopt them; and we have continued to the present day, destitute of this desired aid to our congregational worship.

Under these circumstances, and seeing that individuals better qualified for the task have not undertaken to supply our wants, I have ventured to avail myself of a mass of excellent materials to which I have had access, and now present to the public the result of my labours, in the following Selection of, what I hope will be considered, superior Hymns, adapted to the public or private use of all denominations of Christians, and all classes of society.
