All lovers of good short stories are familiar with Mr. Sullivan's polished, subtle and wholly delightful work and this new collection finds him at his best. O Pioneers! "O Pioneers!" is one of the great romantic novels of recent years - a story of American life done from an absolutely new point of view, a brilliant and intensely dramatic story of the Scandinavian and Bohemian pioneers of the Middle West. In Miss Cather's novel there are two heroines, either of them worth a novel in herself. The splendid Swedish girl, Alexandra Bergson, is left at the age of eighteen to take care of her mother and three younger brothers. She has the good business ability of her race and the independent spirit which has made the Swedish women leaders in the movement for the emancipation of their sex. Alexandra becomes the richest and most influential citizen of her county, but her success is embittered by the jealousy of her less intelligent brothers. Out of this jealousy results a family quarrel about property, which affords some of the most dramatic scenes of the story. The feminist theme of the novel is strong and convincing. Miss Cather maintains that only weak and unsuccessful men resent strength and achievement in women. It is a feudal attitude of her brothers that at last drives Alexandra to revolt. The second heroine is a very different kind of woman the little Bohemian, Marie Tovesky, whose eyes have yellow sparkles, like champagne, and whose love story is so tender and beautiful that it is the very story of Youth. One would not know where to look in American fiction for a story so gay or so tragic as hers. It is only by the happiest of accidents that a novelist can throw his net about a young creature so brilliant and palpitating with life and bring her alive into his pages. This novel is the very voice of those vast plains between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains, and of the hope and faith and power that made that country what it is to-day. To sound at the start this note of the courage and triumph of her heroes, Miss Cather has taken her title from Walt Whitman's great hymn to progress, "Pioneers, O Pioneers!" "O Pioneers!" Quickly Written "O Pioneers!" is the fruit of the vivid impressions of the author's early years, caught with the trained workmanship of a practiced writer. It is a fascinating book for the novel reader; to those of the Middle West it will be full of the interest of familiar things, while to many it will be a startling revelation of those Swedish and Bohemian immigrants who present no national problem, but are slowly and surely becoming a strong force in our political and artistic life. The book was written in three months, but as Miss Cather says, it took her years to live it." "When I came to write it," she adds, "the only difficulty was to leave things out." 66 Appreciation from Sarah Orne Jewett In the "Letters of Sarah Orne Jewett" are two written to Miss Cather which give an idea of the affectionate and admiring esteem in which the older writer held the younger. Speaking of a short story published in McClure's, Miss Jewett wrote: "And now I wish to tell you with what deep happiness and recognition I have read the McClure' story, -night before last I found it with surprise and delight. You have drawn your two figures of the wife and her husband with unerring touches and wonderful tenderness for her. It makes me the more sure that you are far on your road toward a fine and long story of very high class. How close - how tender-how true the feeling is! the sea air blows through the very letters on the page." O PIONEERS! By Willa Sibert Cather With frontispiece. $1.25 net. Postage extra. The new departure of our publishers, of issuing together the works of contemporary English novelists who have succeeded at home, is brilliantly justified in his case. He is worth reading; one wishes him success."- New York Tribune. "Mr. Richard Pryce is one of the best contributors to the human comedy of contemporaneous England. He has wit, several kinds of wit, the penetrating flash that reveals character, the verbal and the whimsical, thrown off just for the casual fun of it. He portrays character in exactly the right way; he lets it talk and act for itself.". Boston Herald. "Richard Pryce is a realist of the realists. In certain paragraphs he makes the reader see scenes, smell odors, hear sounds that stir the very dregs of his memory." - Cleveland Plain Dealer. BOSTON "This author sees life with eyes that have looked long alike upon its beauty and sadness, that have grown keen yet sympathetic through comprehending contemplation. He advances no moral, but his attitude toward the right is beyond question, and his characters move us as though actually alive." - Chicago Record-Herald. "Richard Pryce has a way with him when it comes to the analysis of a woman's nature and the putting of her character and her temperament into the structure of a novel. Whatever the type of woman, he takes delight in tearing her inmost soul into bits and putting them all together again in a large, detailed and very lifelike portrait."- New York Times. "Mr. Pryce is a very charming writer, with an easy, pleasant style, a delicate humor, a perception of the lights and shades of human character. He takes a sane and temperate attitude towards life, and his people stand firmly on their feet."- Providence Journal. Pablished in a uniform binding. Each, $1.35 net. Postpaid $1.47. NEW YORK |
