ow eagerly they wish to know he duties he would have them do! What joy their active spirits feel o execute their Sov'reign's will! lither, at his command they fly, 'o guard the beds on which we lie, "o shield our persons, night and day, nd scatter all our fears away.

ghast the hostile Syrian band
round the helpless prophet stand,
While mighty Gabriel downward flies,
And with his armies fills the skies.

Herod attempts, but all in vain,
To bind a Peter with his chain
;
t one soft word an angel speaks-
The massy chain asunder breaks.

Michael and Satan, high in power,
Dread contest held one awful hour;
See-proud self-confidence o'erthrown!
Obedience yielding God his own.

Send, O my God, some angel down,
Though to a mortal eye unknown,
To guide and guard my doubtful way
Up to the realms of endless day.

ALL SAINTS.

THESE glorious souls how bright they shine, Whence all their white array ?

How came they to the happy seats

Of everlasting day ?

From tort'ring pains to endless joys,
On fiery wheels they rode,

And strangely wash'd their raiment white,

In Jesu's dying blood.

Now they approach a spotless God,

And bow before his throne;

Their warbling harps and sacred song
Adore the Holy One.

4 Th' unveiled glories of his face
Amongst his saints reside,

While the rich treasure of his grace
Sees all their wants supplied.

5 Tormenting thirst shall leave their souls, And hunger flee as fast;

The fruit of life's immortal tree
Shall be. their sweet repast.

6 The Lamb shall lead his heavenly flock, Where living fountains rise,

74.

And God himself shall wipe away
All sorrow from their eyes.

(Or)

1 LOOK up to yonder world,

See myriads round the throne !
Each bears a golden harp,

And wears a glorious crown:

With zeal they strike the sacred lyre,
And strive to raise their praises higher.

2 Believing in his name,

3

They in his footsteps trod;
His righteousness their hope,
Their only plea his blood:

Lo! now they reign with him above,
Behold his face, and sing his love.

And shall we not aspire

Like them our course to run;
The crown, if we would wear,

That crown must first be won :

Divinely taught, they show'd the way,
First to believe, and then obey.

END OF BOOK II.

BOOK III.

INS SUITED TO THE DIFFERENT

SEASONS OF THE YEAR.

HYMNS

ON

THE SEASONS.

NEW YEAR'S DAY.

ORD! we are spared, and yet are found
n thy own house, on praying ground.
Jany are gone who near us stood,
one to thy awful bar, O God!

Now soon in heaven, or soon in hell,
We shall with thee or Satan dwell:
Grant, Lord, that with intense desire
Ve may, through Christ, to Heaven aspire.
hat glorious race, if now begun,
Ve in Jehovah's strength go on,
Nor life, nor death, thy servants fear,
Twill be to them a happy year.

THE NEW YEAR.

NOW, gracious Lord! thine arm reveal,
And make thy glory known;
Now let us all thy presence feel,

And soften hearts of stone.

Help us to venture near thy throne,
And plead a Saviour's name,
For all that we can call our own
Is vanity and shame.
