WE should have been glad to have had a more complete biography of so notable a man as the late Mr. Nisbet. But we are thankful for these jottings and lessons, and doubt not that they will be acceptable to many.

Memoir of Colonel Wheeler (afterwards Major-General), E.I.C.S. By Major H, M. CONRAN, late Bengal Artillery. With Preface by MACLEOD WYLIE, Esq. London: Morgan and Chase.

IN a recent number we extracted from this volume the history of Colonel Wheeler's conversion. The volume itself throws much light on the character and influence of Europeans and of the English Government in India.

Pentecost; or, The Revival of the Work of God. By the Rev. GEORGE WILKINSON, Chelmsford. London: Morgan and Chase.

Two gentlemen offered some time ago a prize of one hundred guineas for the best "The Revival of the Work of essay on God," and the prize was awarded by the adjudicators to the author of this volume. The book consists of nine chapters on "The Great Baptism," "The Marks of Revival," "The Means for Obtaining a Revival," 66 Encouragements to Seek Revival," "Hindrances to Revival," "Objections to Revival," "Cautions in regard to Revivals," and "Results of Revival." These subjects are treated with sound judgment and considerable freshness. And we commend the book earnestly to the consideration of ministers and people.

Clifford Castle; A Tale of the English Reformation. By Mrs. MACKAY. Edinburgh: William Oliphant and Co. THIS work was published some years ago. It is now offered to the public "in a revised and more concise shape." Its republication, in these ritualistic days, is well timed. The story is full of interest, and told in a quiet manner that contrasts favourably with the sensational style now

so common.

The Sounding of the Last Trumpet, or the Last Woe. By the Rev. JOHN CUMMING, D.D. London: James Nisbet and Co.

WE differ entirely from Dr. Cumming on the main questions to which he devotes so much time and strength.

The Goldsmith's Widow, and other Stories. Edinburgh: William Oliphant and Co. THIS little book is modern enough in its binding and pictures, but the stories are those of a generation almost gone; this does not, however, detract from their value. It is a book that may be safely recommended.

The Ancient Psalms in appropriate Metres : A strictly Literal Translation from the Hebrew. With Explanatory Notes. Edinburgh: William Oliphant and Co. THIS translation of the Psalms is made upon the principle that "only in the light of David's life can David's Psalms be read." It has evidently been a labour of love with its author; one on which neither time nor trouble has been spared. Only a few of the Psalms are fully expounded, but guiding notes to the meaning of the rest will be found in the margin. We have read the expositions with great interest, and have but one objection to the volume, viz., the awkwardness of expression which must necessarily result from a literal translation fettered by rhyme and metre. "In Memoriam" of the Rev. F. Islip: a Sketch of his Life and Character. By the Rev. T. MAYS. And the Sermon preached on his Death. By the Rev. T. ISLIP. London: Hamilton, Adams, and Co.

A DEEPLY interesting memorial of an earnest, devout, practical, and successful minister of Christ; and a sermon characterized by delicate appreciation of character, great fervour of spirit, and a most judicious application of truth.

Stories from the Greek Mythology. By the

Rev. JAMES WOOD. Edinburgh: Nelson and Sons.

THESE stories (eight in number) are very well told. The small steel engravings in illustration are and very beautiful, altogether, the book will be very attractive to the young, and much more healthful for them than many of the religious tales now so much in vogue.

Trust and Triumph; or, Memorials of Robert E, a Convert from Romanism. London: Morgan and Chase, 38, Ludgate Hill.

THIS brief narrative of the conversion of a Roman Catholic youth, who afterwards became a Scripture reader, is told with simplicity and earnestness.

Lebanon Leaves: Metrical Soliloquies on Passages of Holy Scripture. By the author of "Tendrils in Verse." London: Ebenezer Palmer, Paternoster Row. THIS volume is characterized by devout feeling, rather than by comprehensive thought or flowing verse.
