UR annual lift of the produc- quiries, cannot fail of affording tions in Foreign Literature much information and entertaincommences, as ufual, with the few ment to the reader. - Ar Riga, articles publifhed in the Ruffian M. That ticularly ferviceable to those who gentleman has published, at Riga, may be induced by business erenthe 9th and 10th volumes, or parts, riofity to vifit that metropolis. The contents of account of the public inftitutions these volumes, like thofe of the pre- and public buildings in that city; ceding, are miscellaneous, in profe of the manners and cuftoms of the and verfe, and invite attention by inhabitants; of the literature, arts, the interefting nature of their fub- and fciences, of Ruffia; and is enjects. In verfe, the most striking of his pie. ces are entitled Negro-Idyls, and defcribe, in a truly affecting manner, the miferies occafioned by the flave trade, both in Africa and America. At Peterburg, M.F.E. Schrader has published the 2d volume of "Dr. J. Reinegg's general historical and topographical Defcription of Cancafus, compiled from his pofthumous papers." This work, like a voyage to unknown regions, undertaken and defcribed by a perfon of eminent talents, and indefatigable in bis in

has published a treatife on "the origin, progrefs, and prefent ftate of the Ruffian hunting mufic," which is an object of fome curiofity. This fpecies of mufic was invented by J. A. Marefch, mafter of the imperial chapel, who died in 1791, and is performed entirely on horns, "fome long and traight, others more or lefs fhort, and a little ^icurved, but all of the fame tone!” It is fpoken of by the author, as enchanting, not only to thofe who are not exquifitely mufical, but to connoiffeurs; and carried to fuch. a degree of perfection, "that the quartettos and quintettos of Haydn, Mozart, and Pleyel, may be performed with it, and the concertos of Giarnovichi executed even to the

fhake, with admirable precifion and celerity." At Riga, a pleafing anonymous work has appeared, entitled "Lucumon, or Accounts of extraordinary Men in Physical and Moral Refpects, with a View of the Wonders of Nature and Art in the Hiftory of Countries and Nations, calculated for Inftruction and Entertainment," by the perufal of which young perfous may be gradually allured to the ftudy of more important publications in history and fcience-At the fame place has been publifhed a novel, confifting of love tales, and wonderful narratives, and entitled "The Savoyard Family."

When we come to Swedish Literature, we have to announce the publication of the "New Trans actions of the Royal Academy of Sciences, for 1797," parts I-III. In this volume, among other fcientific and economical articles, we have a continuation of Dr. Melanderhielm's interesting hiftory of fcience; a geometrical ellay on the motion of fuch bodies as are moved to or from a given point, in the inverfe duplicate ratio of their diftance from fuch a point, by J. Svanberg; curious experiments, by F. A. Gadd, with the pietra fungaia, a fofil, which if kept in a cellar, and wetted with water, produces a number of edible muthrooms; and a memoir, containing a fatisfactory inveftigation of the method practifed by the ancients, to impart a great degree of hardnefs to their copper weapons, by P. J. Hielm.At Upfal, counfellor Guftavus Paykull has published "Fauna Suecica Infecta," vol. I. This volume extends in its alphabetical arrangement as far as Heterocerus, and contains the first and fmaller half of the Scarabæi, according to the method of Fabricius;

with new fpecies and genera, and fome corrections of Fabricius's defcriptions M. Paykull's qualifications for fuch an undertaking are fufficiently known to all who are inti nately converfant in entomology.At Stockholm, profeffor Sparrman has published the ft volume of a periodical work, which the author's well known abilities and judgment cannot fail of rendering an acceptable prefent, not only to profeffional and scientific men, but to readers in general. It is entitled, "Select, generally useful, and, for the most part, new Elays and Collections in Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Natural Philofophy, Rural Economy, Commerce, and Trade, together with Extracts of interesting Matters in -Natural Hiftory, Books of Geography, and Travels, &c."-At Lund, M. N. H. Sjöborg has published als learned and well-executed Intro duction to the Knowledge of Swe.. difh Antiquities," illuftrated with I: 5 plates; and at the fame place ans anonymous author has published an "Introduction to a more intimate t Acquaintance with Swedef Coins and Medals, from the earliest Times to the End of the Reign of King Haokan Magnuffon," which pra mifes, when complete, to be the moft full and accurate work on the fubject that has ever appeared. The above fhort lift comprises the whole of the publications in Swedifh literature, of which we have. feen any account,

The articles concerning which. we have been enabled to obtain the

lealt information, in Danish litera. ture, are ftill fewer in number than thofe which were inferted in our laft year's fcanty catalogue. Of M. Chriftiani's "Effavs for the Improvement of Mankind," the . first part of a fecond volume bas

made its appearance at Copenhagen. This part confifts of a valua ble and interesting effay on the liberty of the prefs, and the laws refpecting it in Denmark; from which it appears, that the greater freedom enjoyed, at leaft formerly, in that kingdom than in most other countries of Europe, arofe more from the connivance of the execu tive power, than from the actual ftate of the laws. And we fufpect, that at the prefent period, the Danish literati are fufficiently able to appreciate the value of that liberty which depends upon connivance.At the fame place, Dr. J. Clem. Tode, profeffor of phyfic, has publithed the Materia Medica of the mineral Kingdom, comprising crude, prepared, and compound Medicines," vol. I. This work the foreign journalists ftate to poffefs the merit of fuinefs and order, and to be enriched with many important remarks, and useful practical obfervatoins. At the fame place hath appeared "Flora Danicæ conum Fafciculus vicefimus." This grand work has been in a progreffive state of publication ince the year 1761, and confifts of admirably executed engravings, in folio, accompanied with brief defcriptions of the different plants reprefented.

fparing in commendation. We are rather furprifed, however, at the fuggeftion which they convey, that the author had not made himfelf acquainted with Eichhorn's exegetical and critical labours.-At Haarlem, Teyler's Theological Society has publified the fixteenth volume of "Prize Differtations relative to natural and revealed Religion." The lait volume of these valuable papers which fell under our notice was the thirteenth, introduced in this department of our Register for the year 1793. Of the intermediate volumes between that and the prefent, we have not feen any account. With refpect to the volume before us, it contains two differtations on the queftion "whether it can be fatisfactorily proved, that man may at all times, with the affistance of his own understanding, and with his own reafoning only, without the aid of any actual or immediate divine revelation, obtain a proper knowledge of God, and of the divine attributes?" In both differtations, which are the refult of confiderable abilities and ingenuity, the queftion is answered in the negative. The author of the former is M. J. Brouwer, minifter of the baptist church at Leuwarden; and of the latter, M. Bruin, minister of the baptist church at Waftaan.At Anifterdam, and at the Hague, have appeared" Memoirs of the Society for defending Chriftianity, at the Hague, for the Year 1795," which we have barely feen an nounced, without any mention of the merits of the different pieces of which it is compofed. Our readers will recollect, that this fociety was eftablished for the purpose of defending the orthodox doctrines of the reformed church, against the attacks of heretics. From their adrertifement we learn, that the rem

not been inactive in the field of polemics; for it informs us, that the public are foon to receive two other volumes of their prize differtations, for the years 1796 and 1797.-At the Hague, Dr. Heilbron has published "Ah Addrefs and Scheme for improving Phyfic and Surgery in Holland, prefented to the National Affemby April 26, 1796." One part of the author's fcheme was the erection of a fupreme medical college for the republic, which was rejected. To his addrefs, as it now appears, he has added arguments, controverting the objections to that part of his plan, and fome extras from Hufeland's Journal rfp ting the eftablishment at Jena, and others from the book published by the committee of inftruction at Paris.-At Amfterda n, M. J. Wagenaar has publifhed the XIXth and XXth volumes of his "ilfory of the now united Netherlands, particularly of Holland," illuftrated with plates and charts. Thefe volumes bring down the hiftory to the year 1751, and are to be followed by a fupplement, correcting forcer flatements, and accompanied with an index to the whole. At the fame place M. Rhynvic Feith has pub, lished two volumes of Cde, and other Poems," which are faid to poflefs a confiderable degree of merit, fuch as will fecure to the author the continuance of that public favour, which he formerly acquired by fome dramatic pieces.

Concerning thofe readings which Griefbach form us, that it contains not only confidered to be of undoubted authority, but fome others which the editor regards as fuch; that he has divided his own probable readings into two claffes, with marks to diftinguish them from the other various readings, and the additional one of a ftar to fuch as he judges to be moit probable; that the editor has paid great attention to typographical and grammatical accuracy, to the accents, and to the pan Auation, which differs from that of Leufden in more than three hundred places; and that he has added to the text many ufeful.Lummaries. This edition of the New Teftament is in fall octavo.-At Leipfic, M. J. C. H. Nachtigal has published "the Pfalms or Songs of David and his Contemporaries, arranged in Chronological Order, and placed in a new Light," character of a drama, entitled volume I. This new light is the Zion, in which the author has united fuch pfalms or fongs as he has felected, in an interefting and pleafing manner, while he has deadopted in an ingenious and learn-" fended the method which he has ed prefatory difquifition. In our imperfe&t lift of the multitudinous productions of the German prefs, we fhali introduce the articles under the head of Biblical Literature and Theology, with the following work published at Halle: "Novum Teftamentum, Græce. Recognovit atque infignioris Lec1798.
