A captain may abandon his vessel when he has no means of saving it, except at the risk of his life; but an upright statesman will never desert his post when his country is in danger, nor a true soldier desert his colours. Birds will mostly forsake their nests when they discover them to have been visited. Men often inadvertently re linquish the fairest prospects in order to follow some favourite scheme which termi nates in their ruin.
