John, Chap. XIII.-1. Now be-fore the feast of the pass-o-ver, when Je-sus knew that his hour was come that he should de-part out of this world un-to the Fa-ther, hav-ing lov-ed his own which were in the world, he lov-ed them un-to the end.

Luke, Chap. XXII.-14. And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve a-pos-tles with him.

15. And he said unto them, With de-sire I have

de-sir-ed to eat this pass-o-ver with you be-fore I suf-fer.

16. For I say un-to you, I will not a-ny more eat there-of, un-til it be ful-fill-ed in the king-dom of GOD.

Matt., Chap. XXVI.-21. And as they did eat, he said, Ve-ri-ly, I say un-to you, that one of you shall be-tray me.

22. And they were ex-ceed-ing-ly sor-row-ful, and be-gan ev-e-ry one of them to say un-to him, LORD, is it I?

23. And he an-swer-ed and said, He that dip-peth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall be-tray

me.

24. The Son of Man go-eth as it is writ-ten of him; but woe un-to that man by whom the Son of Man is be-tray-ed; it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

25. Then Ju-das, which be-tray-ed Je-sus, answer-ed and said, Mas-ter, is it I? He said un-to

him, Thou hast said.

26. And as they were eat-ing, Je-sus took bread and bless-ed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disci-ples, and said, Take eat, this is my bo-dy.

27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, say-ing, Drink ye all of it.

28. For this is my blood of the New Tes-ta-ment, which is shed for ma-ny, for the re-mis-sion of sins. 29. But I say un-to you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, un-til that day when I drink it new with you in my Fath-er's king-dom.

CHRIST'S AGONY IN THE GARDEN.

Matt., Chap. XXVI:-36. Then com-eth Je-sus with them in-to a place call-ed Geth-sem-a-ne, and saith un-to his dis-ci-ples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yon-der.

37. And he took with him Pe-ter and the two sons of Zeb-e-dee, and be-gan to be sor-row-ful, and ve-ry hea-vy.

38. Then saith he un-to them, My soul is ex-ceed-ing sor-row-ful, e-ven un-to death; tar-ry you here, and watch with me.

39. And he went a lit-tle fur-ther, and fell on his. face, and pray-ed; say-ing, O, my Fa-ther, if it be

pos-si-ble, let this cup pass from me: nev-er-the-less, not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40. And he com-eth un-to the dis-ci-ples, and find-eth them a-sleep, and saith un-to Pe-ter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41. Watch and pray, that ye en-ter not in-to tempta-tion: the spir-it in-deed is will-ing, but the flesh is weak.

42. He went a-way a-gain the sec-ond time, and pray-ed, say-ing, O, my Fa-ther, if this cup may not pass a-way from me ex-cept I drink it, thy will be done.

Luke, Chap. XXII.-43. And there ap-pear-ed an an-gel un-to him from hea-ven, strength-en-ing him.

44. And be-ing in a-go-ny he pray-ed more earn-est-ly and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood fall-ing to the ground.

LESSON XVI.

JESUS CHRIST IS SCOURGED AND CRUCIFIED.

John, Chap. XIX.-1. Then Pi-late there-fore took Je-sus, and scourg-ed him.

2. And the sol-diers plat-ted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3. And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

4. Pi-late there-fore went forth a-gain, and saith un-to them, Be-hold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

5. Then came Je-sus forth, wear-ing the crown of

thorns and the pur-ple robe: and Pi-late said un-to them, Be-hold the man.

6. When the chief priests there-fore and of-fi-cers saw him, they cri-ed out, say-ing. Cru-ci-fy him! cru-ci-fy him! Pi-late saith un-to them, Take ye him and cru-ci-fy him, for I find no fault in him.

7. The Jews an-swer-ed him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, be-cause he made himself the Son of GOD.

Matt., Chap. XXVII.-24. When Pi-late saw that he could pre-vail no-thing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took wa-ter and wash-ed his
