12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

A. D. 60.

13 For what is that in which ye were inferior to other churches, except that I c. 11. 9. myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.

14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for 5 you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.

16 But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.

17 Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent to you?

18 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?

19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves to you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edification.

2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them who heretofore have sinned, and to all others, that, if I come again, I will not spare;

3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, who toward you is not weak, but is mighty in you.

4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak 1 in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God towards you.

5 Examine yourselves, whether ye are in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye are 2 repro

CHAP. XIII.

1 He threateneth severity, and the power of his apostleship against obstinate sinners; 5 and advising them to a trial of their faith, 7 and to reformation of their sins before his coming, 11 he concludeth his epistle with a general exhortation and a prayer.

7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we should be as reprobates.

8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong and this also we wish, even your 3 perfection.

10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.

11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

¶ The Epistle of PAUL to the GALATIANS.

CHAP. I.

6 Paul wondereth that they have so soon left him and the gospel; 8 and accurseth those that preach any other gospel than he did. 11 He learned the gospel not from men, but from God: 13 and showeth what he was before his calling, 17 and what he did presently after it.

and God the Father, who raised him from the dead ;)

2 And all the brethren who are with me, to the churches of Galatia :

3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present

evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

A. D. 58.

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed a Acts 9. 1. from him that called you into the grace of Christ, to another gospel :

7 Which is not another; but there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But thongh we, or an angel from heaven, should preach any other gospel 1 or, made to you than that which we have preached progress. to you, let him be accursed.

9 As we said before, so I say now again, If any man preacheth any other gospel to you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10 For do I now persuade men, or 2 Gr. equals God? or do I seek to please men? for if in years. I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.

12 For I neither received it from man, neither was I taught it, but by the reve- Eph. 3. 8. lation of Jesus Christ.

13 For ye have heard of my manner of life in time past in the Jews' religion, that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it;

14 And 1 profited in the Jews' religion 3 or, returnabove many my 2 equals in my own na- ed. tion, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

17 Neither did I go to Jerusalem to them who were apostles before me: but I went into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

18 Then after three years I 3 went to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

19 But I saw no other of the apostles, save James the Lord's brother.

20 Now the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I lie not.

21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;

22 And was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ:

23 But they had heard only, That he who persecuted us in times past, now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.

24 And they glorified God in me. CHAP. II.

1 He showeth when he went up again to Jerusalem, and for what purpose; 3 and that Titus was not circumcised: 11 and that he resisted Peter, and told him the reason, 14 why he and others, being Jews, do believe in Christ to be justified by faith, and not by works: 20 and that they live not in sin, who are so justified.

@ Rom. 2. 11.

2 And I went by revelation, and com municated to them that gospel which l preach among the Gentiles, but 1 privately to them who were of reputation, lest by any means I should ran, or had run in vain.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privately to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

6 But of these, who seemed to be somewhat, (whatever they were, it maketh no matter to me: a God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat, in conference added nothing to me:

7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed to me, as the gospel of the circumcision was to Peter;

8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me towards the Gentiles :)

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go to the heathen, and they to the circumcision.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

11 But when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

12 For before that certain came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles: but when they had come, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing them who were of the circumcision.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; so that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

of one; but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? By no means: for if there had been a law given which could give life, verily righteousness would have been by the law.

22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up to the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after faith is come, we are no longer under a school-master.

eousness.

7 Know ye therefore, that they who are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel to Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

9 So then they who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curse: for it is Rom. 6. 3. written, Accursed is every' one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live by them.

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for 1 or, rudius: for it is written, Accursed is every ments. one that hangeth on a tree:

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

CHAP. IV.

1 We were under the law till Christ came, as the heir is under his guardian till he is of age. 5 But Christ freed us from the law: 7 therefore we are servants to it no longer. 14 He remembereth their good will to him, and his to them; 22 and showeth that we are the sons of Abraham by the free-woman.

NOW

OW I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he is lord of all;

2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the 1 elements of the world:

4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth Q the Spirit of his Son into Rom. 8. 15. your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a ser

vant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8 However then, when ye knew not God, ye did service to them which by nature are no gods.

9 But now, after ye have known God, or rather are 2 known by God, how turn ye 3 again to the weak and beggarly 4 elements, to which ye desire again to be in bondage?

10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
