CHAP. XXXVI.

1 The inconvenience of the inheritance daughters, 5 is remedied by marrying in their own tribes, 7 lest the inheritance should be removed from the tribe. 10 The daugh ters of Zelophehad marry their father's brothers' sons.

ND the chief fathers of the families

A of the children of Gilead, the son of

Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:

2 And they said, a The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

3 And if they shall be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be put to the inheritance

6 This is the thing which the LORD to the, &c. doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them 2 marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.

So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall 3 keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

13 These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

1 DEUTERONOMY.

CHAP. I.

1 Moses's speech in the end of the fortieth year, briefly rehearsing the story 6 of God's promise, 13 of giving them officers, 19 of sending the epies to search the land, 34 of God's anger for their incredulity, 41 and disobedience.

HESE are the words which Moses

of Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against Suf, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 (There are eleven days journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.)

3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had given him in com-1 mandment to them;

11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

12 How can I alone bear your 4 encumbrance, and your burden, and your

strife?

125 Take ye wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

15 So I took the chief of your tribes,

27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth from the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have 8 discouraged our heart, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover, we have seen the sons of the & Anakims there.

29 Then I said to you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

17 That the LORD spoke to me, say

ing,

18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.

28 Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

29 (As the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 And the LORD said to me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. 33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed 7 the men, and the women, and the little ones of every city, we left none to remain.

35 Only the cattle we took for a prey to ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 From Aroer, which is by the brink Heb. every of the river of Arnon, and from the city city of men, that is by the river, even to Gilead, there men, and was not one city too strong for us: the little ones. LORD our God delivered all to us:

37 Only to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor to any

place of the river Jabbok, nor to the cities on the mountains, nor to whatever the LORD our God forbad us.

CHAP. III.

1 The story of the conquest of Og king of Ba shan: 11 The size of his bed. 12 The distri bution of those lands to the two tribes and half. 23 Moses's prayer to enter into the land: 27 He is permitted to see it.

THE

HEN we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and a Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

2 And the LORD said to me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to & Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt att Heshbon.

3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

CHAP. IV.

1 An exhortation to obedience. 41 Moses ap pointeth the three cities of refuge on that side of Jordan.
