OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. Judges ii. 10.

THINGS, AND THE EVIL Thereof.

WHEN Abimelech had taken Sarah, Abraham's wife, though in the integrity of his heart, not knowing her to be Abraham's wife, because he had said, she was his sister; yet God said unto him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.-Gen. xx. 2-10.

Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey him?-Exod. v. 2.

And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth my hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.-Exod. vii. 5; Ezek. vi. 7. 10. 13; Exod. xiv. 4. 8.

According to thy word, that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God.--Exod. viii. 10.

I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs, &c. that ye may know how that I am the Lord.Exod. x. 1, 2; Deut. iv. 35; Exod. vi. 7.

Jethro said, (when Moses had told him what God had done,) Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods; for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly, he was above them.Exod. xviii. 11; 2 Kings v. 15.

Under the law, they were to offer sacrifices for sins of ignorance, whether of a person, or of the congregation. Levit. iv. 2-4. 13-15; v. 1—6. 17-–19; Numb. xv. 24-26. Ye have seen all that the Lord did, &c. Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. Deut. xxix. 2. 4.

They sacrificed to devils, not to God: to gods whom they knew not; to new gods.-Deut. xxxii. 17.

There arose another generation after

but his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines.-Judges xiv. 3, 4.

The sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.-1 Sam. ii. 12.

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.-1 Sam. iii. 7.

That all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, &c. and that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear, &c.-1 Sam. xvii. 46, 47.

Elijah prays that God will (by an extraordinary means) let it be known this day, that thou art God in Israel, &c. That this people may know that thou art the Lord God.-1 Kings xviii. 36-38.

Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys: therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.-1 Kings xx. 28.

Solomon asked wisdom and knowledge, and God gave it; and riches also.-2 Chron. i. 9-12.

Nevertheless, they shall be his servants: that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.-2 Chron. xii. 8.

God left Hezekiah, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart. 2 Chron. xxxii. 31.

Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Alnighty unto perfection? &c.-Job xi. 7, 8. 12; xxxvii. 5; Eccles. xi. 5.

I have understanding as well as you: I am not inferior to you.-Job xii. 3; xiii. 2.

Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him!-Job xxvi. 14.

There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth him understanding great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgment.-Job xxxii. 8, 9; xxxviii. 36.

I uttered that I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not: I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth thee: wherefore I abhor myself, &c.-Job xlii. 3. 5, 6.

They that know thy name will put their trust in thee, &c. The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth.-Ps. ix. 10. 16.

Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people? &c.-Ps. xiv. 4; liii. 4.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handy work day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge, &c. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple, &c. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.-Ps. xix. 1-4. 7, 8.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen. -Ps. xlvi. 10.

Consume them, that they may not be; and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob, unto the ends of the earth. Selah.-Ps. lix. 13; xcix. 8.

When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me, until I went into the sanctuary of God: then understood I their end, &c. So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.-Ps. lxxiii. 16, 17. 22.

Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee.-Ps. lxxix. 6.

They know not, neither will they understand they walk on in dark.-Ps. lxxxii. 5.

Let them be confounded, &c. that men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the Most High over all the earth.-Ps. lxxxiii. 17, 18. Understand, ye brutish among the

people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?-Ps. xciv. 7-11.

It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.-Ps. xcv. 10.

Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even he shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord.Ps. cvii. 43.

For I know that the Lord is great; and that our Lord is above all gods. -Ps. cxxxv. 5.

Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.-Ps. exliii. 8; cxlvi. 8.

He shewed his word unto Jacob, &c. He hath not dealt so with any nation; and as for his judgments, they have not known them.-Ps. cxlvii. 19, 20.

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels, &c. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? &c. and fools hate knowledge, &c. They shall call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord.-Prov. i. 5. 22. 28, 29.

Apply thine heart to understanding: yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding: if thou seekest her as silver, &c. Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God; for the Lord giveth wisdom, &c. understanding shall keep thee.-Prov. ii. 2—6. 10, 11; iv. 7.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver.-Prov. iii. 13, 14; viii. 5, 6. 11; xvi. 16; Job xxviii. 12. 15, &c.

I beheld a young man void of understanding, passing through the street, &c.-Prov. vii. 7, &c.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of

the holy is understanding.-Prov. ix. 10.

Wise men lay up knowledge. Prov. x. 14.

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way.-Prov. xiv. 8. Evil men understand not judgment; but they that seek the Lord understand all things.-Prov. xxviii. 5. Surely I am more brutish than any and have not the understanding of a man.- -Prov. xxx. 2.

Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, &c. If &c. go thou know not, O thou fairest, thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock. Cant. i. 7, 8.

The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know; my people doth not consider.-Isa. i. 3.

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge. Isa. v. 13.

Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see, &c. and understand.-Isa. vi. 9, 10; Matt. xiii. 13, 14.

The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.-Isa. xi. 9; Hab. ii. 14.

The Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day, and shall do sacrifice, &c. -Isa. xix. 21.

It is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them.-Isa. xxvii. 11.

The Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep; and hath closed your eyes, &c. and the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, &c. therefore, &c. the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid, &c. In that day shall the eyes of the blind see out of obscurity, &c. They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, &c.—Isa. xxix. 10— 14. 18. 24.

Save us from his hand; that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, even thou only.-Isa. xxxvii. 20.

Have ye not known? &c. it is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth.-Isa. xl. 21, 22.

That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this.-Isa. xli. 20.

I will bring the blind by a way they knew not; I will lead them in paths they have not known.-Isa. xlii. 16.

They have not known, nor understood; for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. And none considereth in his heart; neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it, &c.— Isa. xliv. 18, 19.

Nations that knew not thee, shall run unto thee, because of the Lord thy God.-Isa. lv. 5.

They that handle the law, knew me not.-Jer. ii. 8.

I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.-Jer.

iii. 15.

My people are foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.— Jer. iv. 22; viii. 7; ix. 3. 6; v. 21; Hosea v. 4.

Let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.-Jer. ix. 24.

I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord.-Jer. xxiv. 7; Hosea ii. 20.

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them.Jer. xxxi. 34.

All the remnant, &c. shall know

The priest's lips should keep knowledge.-Mal. ii. 7.

The light of the body is the eye, &c. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

No man knoweth the Father, save
the Son; and he to whomsoever the
Son will reveal him.-Matt. xi. 27.

But the people that do know their God, shall be strong, and do exploits: and they that understand among the people, shall instruct many, &c. and some of them of understanding shall fall. Dan. xi. 32, 33. 35.

Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased, &c. And none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. -Dan. xii. 4. 10.

For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, &c.Hosea ii. 8.

The Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land: because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land, &c. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest unto me.-Hosea iv. 1. 6.

Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord, &c. For I desired, &c. the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings.-Hosea vi. 3. 6.

I taught Ephraim also to go, &c. but they knew not that I healed them. -Hosea xi. 3.

Who is wise? and he shall understand these things: prudent? and he shall know them.-Hosea xiv. 9. The poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.-Zech. xi. 11.

I

If ye had known what this meaneth, will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned, &c.— Matt. xii. 7.

Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven; but to them it is not given, &c. therefore speak I to them in parables, &c. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, &c.-Matt. xiii. 11. 13. 16. 19. 35; Mark iv. 11, 12. 15. 34.

If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch, &c. Are ye also yet without understanding?Matt. xv. 14. 16.

Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.-Matt. xxii. 29.

The Gadarenes (through ignorance of Christ) besought him to depart from them.-Luke viii. 37.

Peter said, &c. Let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias; not knowing what he said.-Luke ix. 33.

I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes; even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight, &c. No man knoweth who the Son is, &c. who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him, &c. Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see.-Luke x. 21-23.

Woe unto you, lawyers; for ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered, (or forbade.)—Luke xi. 52.

will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes: but he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. Luke xii. 47, 48.

&c. When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, &c. If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, &c. Why do ye not understand my speech? Jesus took unto him the twelve, even because ye cannot hear my word. and said unto them, &c. And they-John viii. 12. 19. 28. 32. 43; xiv. understood none of these things, and 7. 9. this saying was hid from them; neither knew they, &c.-Luke xviii. 31. 34; John xii. 16; xiii. 7; xx. 9.

He beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. -Luke xix. 41, 42.

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.-Luke xxiv. 45.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him; and the world knew him not.-John i. 10. 26.

Ye must be born again, &c. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tell you heavenly?— John iii. 7. 9, 10. 12.

If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water, &c. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship.-John iv. 10. 22.

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?-John vi. 52.

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, &c.-John vii. 17.

I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, &c. ye neither know me nor my Father; if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also,

We know that God spake unto Moses; as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is, &c. Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind, &c. If ye were blind, ye should have no sin, &c.John ix. 29. 39. 41.

He that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.-John xii. 35.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.-John xiii. 17.

All these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.-John xv. 21, 22; xvi. 2, 3.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent, &c. They have known surely that I came out from thee, &c. The world hath not known thee; but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.-John xvii. 3. 7, 8. 25.

As yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. xii. 16. John xx.

9;

It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.-Acts i. 7.

Ye denied the Holy One, &c. and killed the Prince of life; and now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it; as did also your rulers. Acts iii. 14, 15. 17.

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.-Acts iv. 13.
