should have been stoned); and when they had brought them, they set them before the council; and the high priest asked them, saying, Did we not straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? And behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Ac. v. 24-28. And the same time there arose no small stir about that way; for a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen, whom he called together with the workmen of the like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying, that they be no gods which are made with hands: so that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. And when they heard these sayings they were full of wrath, and cried out saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. Ac. xix. 23-28. Men of Israel, help (cried the Jews which were of Asia): this is the man (Paul) that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place and further, brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place (for they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple). And all the city was moved, and the people ran together; and they took Paul and drew him out of the temple and forthwith the doors were shut. Ac. xxi. 28, 29, 30.

35 A lawyer.] The Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of "him" ("John"). Lu. vii. 30. And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Lu. x. 25.

Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying (pronouncing woe unto the Scribes and Pharisees), thou reproachest us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers; for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you, lawyers, for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. Lu. xi. 45, 46. 52. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on

the sabbath-day? Lu. xiv. 3. Bring Zenas the lawyer, and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. Tit. iii. 13.

Tempting him.] See verse 18. And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife! tempting him. Mar. x. 2.

36 Which is the great commandment.] See chap. v. 19, 20; xv. 6. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Mat. xxiii. 23, 24. I have written to him (Ephraim) the great things of my law; but they were counted as a strange thing. Ho. viii. 12. One of the Scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment of all? And the second is like, namely, this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; there is none other commandment greater than these. And the Scribes said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God, and there is none other but he. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. Mar. xii. 28-33. Woe unto voa, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue, and all manner of herbs, and, pass over judgment, and the love of God; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Lu. xi. 42.

37. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God.] Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. De. vi. 5. And now, Israel, what doth the Lord God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul? Da. x. 12. The Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. De. xxx. 6. God is one Lord and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. Mar. xii. 29, 30. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind. Lu. x. 27. The carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Ro. viii. 7. This is the covenant that I will make with them after these days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. He. x. 16, 17. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous; for whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that 1 overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John v. 2—5. 39 Thou shalt love, &c.] Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mat. xix. 19. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. I am the Lord. Le. xix. 18. And the second (commandment) is like (the first), namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; there is none other commandment greater than these. Mar. xii. 31. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbour as thyself (said a certain lawyer to Jesus). And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right, this do, and thou shalt live. Lu. x. 27, 28. Thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Ro. xiii. 9, 10. All the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ga. v. 14. If ye fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well.

Neighbour as thyself.] Who is my neighbour (said the lawyer to Jesus)? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among

thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite when he was at the place came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side; but a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he saw him he had compassion on him, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him: and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay thee; which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go and do thou likewise. Lu. x. 29-37. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Ro. xv. 2. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Ga. vi. 10.

40 On these two, &c.] See chap. vii. 12. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John i. 17. We know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God; therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin; but now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. Ro. iii. 19, 20, 21. He that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ro. xiii. 8, 9, Now the end of the commandment is charity, out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. 1 Ti. i. 5. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be

the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 1 John iv. 7-11. We loved him, because he first loved us; if a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar, for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also. 1 John iv. 19, 20, 21. If ye fulfil the royal law, according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. Ja. ii. 8.

41 The Pharisees were gathered, &c.] See verse xv. 34. Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the Scribes, That Christ is the Son of David? for David himself said, by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David himself therefore calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. Mar. xii. 35, 36, 37. How say they that Christ is David's son? And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore calleth him lord: how is he then his son? Lu. xx. 41-44.

42 What think ye of Christ?] And when "he" ("Herod") had gathered all the chief priests and Scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born? And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou, Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, art not the least among the princes of Juda; for out of thee shall come a governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Mat. ii. 4, 5, 6. They that were in the ship (and who saw him walking on the sea) came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. Mat. xiv. 33. When Jesus came into the coasts of Cesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Mat. xvi. 13-16. Rabbi (said Nathanael unto Jesus), thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. John i. 39. Lord, to whom shall we go (said Simon Peter)? Thou hast the words of eternal life; and we believe, and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. John vi. 68, 69. My Lord, and my God

(said Thomas, having thrust his hand into the wounded side of his Master). John xx. 28. Wherefore God hath highly exalted “him" (" Christ”), and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. Phi. ii. 9, 10, 11. What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ; yea, doubtless, I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith; that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. Phi. iii. 7-10. There is neither Greek, nor Jew, circumcision, nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free; but Christ is all and in all. Col. iii. 11. The Lord is gracious, to whom coming as unto a living stone, disallowed, indeed, of men, but chosen of God, and precious. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God, by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner-stone, elect, precious, and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe, he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner. 1 Pe. ii. 3-7. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain (said the angels, &c., with a loud voice) to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. Re. v. 12, 13, 14.

The son of David.] See chap. i. 1; xxi. 9. Hear ye now, O house of David, Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; behold, s virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and

There shall come forth a Rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots; and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord ; and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears; but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. Is. xi. 1-4. 3 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days shall Judah be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness. Je. xxiii. 5, 6. And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall i feed them, even my servant David : he shall = feed them, and he shall be their shepherd ; and I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them. I the Lord have spoken it. Ez. xxxiv. 23, 24.

Lu. ii. 26, 27. Men and brethren (said Peter), this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Ac. i. 16. Therefore (David) being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; he seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. Ac. ii. 30, 31. Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith (by David), To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, &c. He. iii. 7. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the

This man (Christ) after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. He. x. 12, 13. Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
