18 the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and

they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the Scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles. And they shall mock him, and scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and the third day he shall rise again. Mar. x. 32, 33, 34. Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished; for he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on. And they shall scourge him, and put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things, and this saying was hid from them; neither knew they the things which were spoken. Lu. xviii. 31-34. Much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. John xii. 12, 13.

Took the twelve disciples apart, &c.] See chap. xiii. 11; xvi. 13. And Moses' father-inlaw said unto him, (counselling him to provide rulers of thousands, &c.,) The thing that thou doest is not good. Er. xviii. 17. Henceforth, I call you not servants (said Jesus to his disciples), for the servant knoweth not what his Lord doeth, but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father, I have made known unto you. John xv. 15. "Him" ("Jesus") God raised up on the third day, and shewed him openly, not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to " us" ("his apostles") who did eat and drink with him, after he rose from the dead. Ac. x. 41.

18 And the Son of man shall be betrayed.] See chap. xvi. 21; xvii. 22, 23. Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Mat. xxvi. 2. Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing; the kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. Ps. ii. 1, 2, 3. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring. O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not, and in the night season, and am not silent. Ps. xxii. 1, 2. Save me, O God, for the waters are come in unto my soul, I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing.

I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary of my crying, my throat is dried, mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. Ps. Ixix. 1, 2, 3, &c. Who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed; for he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form not comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and we hid, as it were, our faces from him. He was despised, and we esteemed him not; surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep be fore her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Is. liii. 1-9. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. Know, therefore, and understand, that from the going forth of the com mandment to restore and to build Jerusalem, unto the Messiah the Prince, shall be seven weeks and threescore, and two weeks. The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city, and the sanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week, and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cense; and for the overspread. ing of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Da. ix. 24-27. Him (Jesus) being delivered

They shall condemn him to death.] What think ye (said the high priest to the people)? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. Mat. xxvi. 66. When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. Mat. xxvii. 1. Ye have heard the blasphemy, said the high priest, what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy. And the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. Mar. xiv. 64, 65. What need we any further witness? For we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. Lu. xxii. 71.

19 Shall deliver him to the Gentiles.] And when they (the chief priests, &c.) had bound him (Jesus), they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Mat. xxvii. 2. And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and Scribes, and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. And the soldiers led him away into the hall called Pretorium; and they called together the whole band. Mar. xv. 1. 16. And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate, and they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar, saying, That he himself is Christ, a king. Lu. xxiii. 1, 2. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment; and it was early, and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover. John xviii. 28. The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.

But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; and killed the Prince of Life, whom God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses. And his name, through faith in his name, hath made this man strong whom ye see and know; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Ac. iii. 13-16. I

delivered unto you first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day; and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. After that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that he was seen of James, then of all the apostles. 1 Co. xv. 3-7. See chap. xxvii. 2.

To mock, &c.] Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ: who is he that smote thee? Mat. xxvi. 67, 68. The soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe; and when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail! king of the Jews. And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own rai. ment on him, and led him away to crucify him. Mat. xxvii. 27-31. All they that see me, laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him; Let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. Ps. xxii. 7, 8. With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth. Ps. xxxv. 16. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Is. liii. 3. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy; and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. Mar. xiv. 65. The soldiers led him away into the hall called Pretorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, and began to salute him, Hail! king of the Jews. And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees, worshipped him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. And they that passed by, railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah! thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save thyself, and come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mock

20 crucify him; and the third day he shall rise again.

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worship21 ping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the

ing, said among themselves, with the Scribes, he saved others, himself he cannot save. Mar. xv. 16-20. 29, 30, 31. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. Lu. xxiii. 11. Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, and said, Hail! king of the Jews; and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. John xix. 1-4.

And the third day he shall rise again.] See chap. xii. 40; xvi. 21. Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust, for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. Is. xxvi. 19. After two days will he revive us; in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Ho. vi. 2. Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. Lu. xxiv. 46. I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received: how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures. 1 Co. xv. 3, 4.

The mother of Zebedee's children.] See chap. iv. 21. Many women were there (at the crucifixion), beholding afar off, among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. Mat. xxvii. 56. There were also women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome. Mar. xv. 40.

Worshipping him.] See chap. ii. 11; viii. 2: xiv. 33; xv. 25. And when they (the disciples) saw him (Jesus, after his resurrection), they worshipped him, but some doubted. Mat. xxviii. 17.

The blind man (of Jericho) said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. Mar. x. 51. What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? (said Jerus), and he (Bartimeus of Jericho) said, Lord, that I may receive my sight. Lu. xviii. 41. Seek them not, for behold I will bring evil upon all flesh, said the Lord: bat thy life will I give unto thee, for a prey in all places whither thou goest. Je. xlv. 5. Grant unto us (said the sons of Zebedee), that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. Mar. x. 37. Kings'

The one on thy right hand.] Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah: and the king arose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king's mother. And she sat en his right hand; then she said (making request of Solomon), let Abishag, the Shunammite be given to Adonijah. 1 Ki. ii. 19. 21. daughters were among thy honourable women, upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. Ps. xlv. 9. The Lord said unto my lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Ps. CI. 1. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them (the disciples), he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. Mar. xvi. 19. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died; yea, rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of

left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not 22 what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye 23 shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom

God, who also maketh intercession for us. Ro. viii. 34. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Col. iii. i.

In thy kingdom.] And when "he" ("Christ") was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them, and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation. Neither shall they say, Lo, here! or lo, there! for behold, the kingdom of God is within you. Lu. xvii. 20, 21. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. Lu. xix. 11. When they were come together, they asked of him saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? Ac. i. 6.

22 Ye know not what ye ask.] Ye know not what ye ask! Can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? &c. Mar. x. 38. The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Ro. viii. 26, 27. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ja. iv. 3.

The cup that I shall drink of.] O my Father (said Jesus), if it be possible let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. Mat. xxvi. 39. 42. The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved, I bear up the pillars of it. Ps. lxxv. 3. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me, Take the wine-cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send thee (Jeremiah) to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all the nations to drink unto whom the Lord had sent me. Je. xxv. 15, 16, 17. Abba, Father (said Jesus), all things are possible unto thee: take away this cup from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt. Mar. xiv. 36. Father, if thou be willing remove this cup from me, nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done. Lu. xxii. 42. Put up thy sword (said Jesus to Peter who had cut off

the right ear of Malchus) into the sheath; the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? John xviii. 11.

23 Ye shall drink indeed of my cup.] And he (Herod) killed James the brother of John with the sword. Ac. xii. 2. And if (ye be) children, then (are ye) heirs, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Ro. viii. 17. Our hope of you is stedfast, knowing that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. 2 Co. i. 7, "Whereof" (" of which Gospel") I Paul am made a minister; who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church. Col. i. 23, 24. It is a faithful saying, For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him. If we suffer, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us. 2 Ti. ii. 11, 12. I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Re. i. 9.

For whom it is prepared.] Come, ye blessed of my Father (shall the king say in the last day), inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Mat. xxv. 34. To sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. Mar. x. 40. But now “they” (“many excellent persons of old time") desire a better country, that is an heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed to

24 it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they 25 were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great 26 exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you;

be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city. He. xi. 16.

24 They were moved with indignation.] Only by pride cometh contention, but with the well-advised is wisdom. Pr. xiii. 10. When the ten heard "it" (" the suit of Zebedee's sons), they began to be much displeased with James and John. Mar. x. 41. They (the disciples) began to enquire among themselves which of them it was that should do this thing (should betray him). And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so. But he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. Lu. xxii. 23-26. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. 1 Co. xiii. 4. Let nothing be done through strife, or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem other better than themselves. Phi. ii. 3. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth: this wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish; for where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy; and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Ja. iii. 14—18. From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace; wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Ja. iv. 1. 5, 6. Ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder; yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility; for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pe. v. 5.

25 Called them unto him.] See chap. xi. 29; xviii. 3, 4. After he (Jesus) had washed "their" ("the disciples") feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master, and Lord, and ye say well, for so I am. If I, then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet; for I have given you an example, that ye should

do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, 1 say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him; if ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John xiii. 12 -17.

The princes of the Gentiles.] Ye know (said Jesus) that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles, exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority upon them. Mar. x. 42. The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be sou But he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? But I am among you as he that serveth. Lu. xxii. 25—27. Exercise dominion.] For "this cause" (" because the Chaldeans could not show Nebwchadnezzar his dream") the king was angry, and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain. Thou, O king (said Daniel), art a king of kings; for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. Da. ii. 12, 13. 37. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And they stood before the image, and fell down, and worship ped the golden image. Wherefore at that time, certain Chaldeans came and accused the Jews (of not worshipping the golden image). Now if ye be ready (said the king to the Jews) that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, &c. and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship, well: but if ye wor ship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. If it be so (said Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego), our God whom we serve is able to deliver us. Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed; and he commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated; and he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Da. iii. 2-19.

25 It shall not be so among you.] Be not ye called rabbi; for one is your master, even
