forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an 30 hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

CHAPTER XX.

1 FOR the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an house

the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Re. xxi. 12-14. In the midst of the street of "it" ("the New Jerusalem"), and on either side of the river (of water of life) was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Re. xxii. 2.

29 Every one that hath forsaken, &c.] See chap. xvi. 25. There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my sake, and the Gospel's, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, and in the world to come eternal life. Mar. x. 29, 30. There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children for the kingdom of God's sake; who shall not receive manifold more, in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting. Lu. xviii. 29, 30. Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Co. ii. 9.

Or brethren, &c.] See chap. viii. 21, 22; x. 37, 38, and com. Henceforth know we no man after the flesh; yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 2 Co. v. 16.

My name's sake.] See chap. v. 11. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John xv. 19. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Pe. iv. 14. For his (Christ's) name's sake they (the brethren) went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 3 John 7.

An hundredfold.] See chap. xiii. 8. 23. Inherit everlasting life.] See verse 16. Come, ye blessed of my Father (skall the King say unto them on his right hand), inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Mat. xxv. 34.

30 Many that are first, &c.] See chap. viii. 11, 12. So the last shall be first, and the first last; for many be called, but few chosen. Mat. xx. 16. The Publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before "you" (“ Scribes and Pharisees"); for John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the Publicans and harlots believed him. Mat. xxi. 31, 32. Many that are first shall be last, and the last first. Mar. x. 31. All the people that heard "him" ("Jesus"), and the Publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John; but the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Lu. vii. 29, 30. Behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. Lu. xiii. 30. The Publican (in the parable), standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. La xviii. 13, 14. Moreover, the law entered that the offence might abound; but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, that as sin reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness, unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. v. 20, 21. What shall we say then? That the Gentiles which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith? But Israel which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore, because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law: for they stumbled at that stumbling-stone. As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence; and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Ra ix. 30-33. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? Ga. v. 7. Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. He. iv. l.

CHAP. XX.-1 The kingdom of heaven, &c.] See chap. iii. 2; xiii. 24. 31. 34. 44. 45, 47. A man that is an householder.] See chap.

holder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers 2 for a penny a-day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went 3

ix. 37, 38. There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. Mat. xxi. 33. Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, } must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred. Can. viii. 11, 12. Now will I sing to my well beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill; and he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein; and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. Is. v. 1, 2. I am the true vine (said Jesus), and my Father is the husbandman. John xv. 1.

Early in the morning.] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not. Mat. xxiii. 37. See preced. com. The word of the Lord hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened; and the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor in clined your ear to hear. They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you, and to your fathers for ever and ever. Je. xxv. 3-5.

Labourers into his vineyard.] The Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Mar. xiii. 34. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Co. xv. 58. Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever, Amen. He. xiii. 21. And besides this, giving diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly-kindness; and to brotherly

kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins; wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. 2 Pe. i. 5—10.

He had agreed with the labourers.] See verse 13. If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people; for all the earth is mine; and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. Ex. xix. 5, 6. Go thou near (said Moses, using the words of the people's request), and hear all that the Lord our God shall say, and speak thou (Moses) unto us all that the Lord our God shall speak unto thee, and we (the Israelites) will hear it and do it. And the Lord heard the voice of your words (said Moses) when ye spake (thus) unto me; and the Lord said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee; they have well said all that they have spoken. Oh that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever. Go, say to them, Get you into your tents again. 27-30.

De. v.

A penny a day.] See chap. xviii. 28. Shew me the tribute money. And they brought him a penny. Mat. xxii. 19. On the morrow when he (the Samaritan who relieved him that fell among thieves) departed (from the inn) he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay thee. Lu. x. 35. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. Re. vi. 6.

He sent them into his vineyard.] Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded with a linen ephod; and the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men. 1 Sa. ii. 18. 26. And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli, and the word of the Lord was precious in those days: there was no open vision; the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord. 1 Sa. iii. 1. 21. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children ? And he said,

out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the 4 market-place, And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard,

There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold he keepeth the sheep; and Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he. 1 Sa. xvi. 11, 12. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee, and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; behold, I have done according to thy words. 1 Ki. iii. 6—11. It shall come to pass (said Obadiah to Elijah) as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the Lord shall carry thee whither I know not, and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me. But I thy servant fear the Lord from my youth. 1 Ki. xviii. 12. In the eighth year of his (Josiah's) reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. 2 Ch. xxxiv. 3. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth; while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. Ec. xii. 1. He (John) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother's womb. Lu. i. 15. From a child "thou" ("Timothy") hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Ti. iii. 15.

3 The third hour.] And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. Mar. xv. 25. These are not drunken, as ye suppose (said

Peter on the day of Pentecost), seeing it is but the third hour of the day. Ac. ii. 15.

Standing idle in the market-place.] See verse vi. 7; chap. xi. 16, 17. Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep, and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. Pr. xix. 15. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom (said the Lord to Jerusalem), Pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness, was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. Ez. xvi. 49. Therefore (as he Paul saw the city of Athens wholly given up to idolatry), disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily, with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoicks encountered him; and some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean? (for all the Athenians and strangers which were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.) Ac. xvii. 17—20. And withal they (the young widows) learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tatlers also, and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 1 Ti. v. 13. We desire that ye be not slothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience inherit the promises. He. vi. 12.

4 Go ye also into the vineyard.] See chap. ix. 9. By what authority doest thou these things? (said the chief priests to Jesus) and who gave thee this authority! And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing? The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. But what think ye? A certain man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, Son go, work to-day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir, and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the Publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. Mat. xxi. 23-27. 31. Whea they (the Jews) saw it (that Zaccheus received Jesus) they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that was a

sinner. And Zaccheus stood and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Lu. xix. 7-10. Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves servants 3 to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness. But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of because of the infirmity of your flesh, for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness, and to iniquity unto iniquity; 翼 even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. Ro. vi. 16-22. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you; but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Co. vi. 11. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious; but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 1 Ti. i. 12, 13. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works; these things are good and profitable unto men. Tit. iii. 8. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end; for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Pe. i. 13. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries. Pe. iv. 1, 2, 3.

[ocr errors]

And whatsoever is right I will give you.] Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. Col. iv. 1.

5 Sixth and ninth hour.] From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. Mat. xxvii. 45. When the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama, sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Mar. xv. 33, 34. It was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour; and the sun was darkened, and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Lu. xxiii. 44, 45, 46. They (two of John's disciples) came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. John i. 39. Jesus being wearied with his journey, sat thus on "the well" ("Jacob's well"), and it was about the sixth hour. John iv. 6. Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. John xi. 9. Now Peter, and John went up into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. Ae. iii. l. "He" ("Cornelius," the centurion) saw in a vision evidently, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, &c. Ac. x. 3. Peter went up upon the house-top to pray about the sixth hour. Ac. x. 9.

And did likewise.] Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee; and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing; and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee, and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him. And Lot went with him and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Ge. xii 1-4. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood, in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. Jos. xxiv. 2, 3. When he (Manasseh) was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God, and humbled

himself greatly before the God of his fathers, and prayed unto him, and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem, into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God. Now after this he built a wall without the city of David. And he took away the strange gods and the idol out of the house of the Lord, and all the altars that he had built. And he repaired the altar of the Lord, and sacrificed thereon peace-offerings and thank-offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel. 2 Ch. xxxiii. 12-16. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. He. xi. 24, 25, 26.

6 The eleventh hour.] Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. Ec. ix. 10. Dost not thou fear God (said one of the malefactors to the other), seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Lu. xxiii. 40-43. I must work the works of him that sent me (said Jesus) while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. John ix. 4.

Why stand ye here all the day idle?] verse 3.

7 Because no man hath hired us.] should turn from these vanities (said Barnabas and Paul to the people of Lystra) unto the living God; who, in times past, suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent. Ac. xiv. 16. Because he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Ac. xvii. 30, 31. How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is

written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things? But they have not all obeyed the Gospel; for Esaias saith, Lord! who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of God. Ro. x. 14-17. Now to him that is of power to stablish you, according to my Gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ (according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began), to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen. Re. xvi. 25. 27. Wherefore remember, that ye, being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision, by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands, that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. Ep. ii. 11, 12. I wrote afore in few words, whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which, in other ages, was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets, by the Spirit. Ep. iii. 4, 5. Be not moved away from the hope of the Gospel; even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints. Col. i. 26.

Go ye also into the vineyard.] Go ye inte the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was furnished with guests. Mat. xxii. 9, 10. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. Ec. ix. 10. That servant (who was sent at supper-time to invite the guests) came and shewed his lord these things (their different excuses). Then the master of the house being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. Lu. xiv. 21, 22, 23. I must work the work of him that sent me (said Jesus) while it is day; the night cometh when no man can work. John ix. 4.

And whatsoever is right, &c.] Whatsoever
